Jan 17, 2012 12:10 AM in response to Jakebladeby fotkin,Crashed my Safari on Gizmodo for me too. I connected iPad to my mac and run Xcode and went to Console, where I can see all error messages in real time, and here what I saw when I started Safari and open a web page:

So, basically we can see that as I open Safari, it gives warning about memory and starts killing background application abnormally (with signal 9).
and when it crashes, it writes to Console the following:

hope they will fix it in 5.1, which will come out sooner or later.

Jan 17, 2012 1:52 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Kintla,Wow, 28 pages of replies and 132,000 views on just this thread alone. You boys at Apple got the hint yet? This constant crashing is driving everyone NUTS and it's been going on for months. You guys have an ETA on a fix for this thing or what? Safari crashed TWICE just getting to this page.

Representing a hundred unhappy users out of millions and millions of iPads in use today. Sure is impressive.

Jan 17, 2012 1:57 PM in response to Kintlaby paulcb,There are no 'you guys' here. Just us users like you. Apple NEVER responds in these forums. They moderate but that's all. No one here knows when or what Apple is doing about this issue.
-
Jan 17, 2012 2:27 PM in response to paulcbby Sam Katz1,Please contact tech support and do what they say. A DFU restore is not the solution, apparently. So determine what is. Only tech support or the genius bar will have the answer.
That page listed earlier does not crash my ipad's safari. (Gizmodo) An earlier example (Google+) does.

Jan 17, 2012 2:27 PM in response to Rob Bruenby HGCx,After reading this forum, I tried something that was suggested and it has gone MADE AN ENOROMOUS difference. A few people suggested turning on debug mode in Safari and the advanced preference panel. I did and this is the first time in two months that Safari has not quit every two minutes!!!!!!!
Ever since upgrading to ios 5.0 then 5.0.1 my iPad has been the worst computing experience of my life. I tried resetting and restoring multiple times. I tried everything!!
FINALLY, on suggestions found here I turned on the Safari debugger and I can finally use my iPad again with out random and frequent crashes and slow downs. If you are still having problems give it a try.
Honestly, Apple should be ashamed of how bad an experience this is for all of us!!
-
Jan 17, 2012 6:58 PM in response to HGCxby Sam Katz1,I'm really glad this worked. I also wanted to remark that if other non-safari browsers are not crashing, then it's either not a webkit problem, or something in the way Safari is handling exceptions, which turning on debug mode fixes.
Howwver, given that I'm not having the problem on my ipad 2 or iphone (in fact there are zero reports of it happening on other devices on this thread), it seems to be confined to a few devices, which makes it puzzling. Other people reports that a hardware replacement does minimize the issue. Does a developer want to comment on what happens when you turn on debug mode?

Jan 17, 2012 7:00 PM in response to fotkinby Sam Katz1,Hi,
What the heck is MobileMail and why is it the first thing to be killed? Is that the mail client? Does it kill in any particular order or with any reason to it?

Jan 17, 2012 8:11 PM in response to Sam Katz1by PilotSmith,This is also a problem on the iPad 2. Mine crashes a lot after the update to 5.x. In addition to Safari crashing, other web bowsers I installed also crash. Even mail occasionally crashes. Turning on debug in safari appears to have improved it somewhat. Perhaps people can start posting their iPad details to see if any trends.
Mine is an iPad2, 16GB, with AT&T 3G, OS ver 5.01.

Jan 18, 2012 3:47 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Stephen Bennett1,As a developer I am experiencing this issue too.... The site I'm working on http://www.ionsonic.com (recently) started to crash iPad's Safari browser constantly. This is a real pain.... as any developer will tell you until you find the problem you generally go around thinking the issue is with your work and your code. But happily once again after extensive debugging this appears not to be the case. Why? Well Safari on the iPad appears to have an iframe issue or a bug. Here's the detail. If the social network plugins for the facebook like, twitter tweet and google plus buttons are disabled on http://www.ionsonic.com the site remains stable, it does not crash the browser. Enable any one of the social plugins bringing an iframe back onto the page and the site once again crashes the browser constantly. Therefore to me it looks like there is a issue with Safari's mechanism for handling iframes, in my case iframes embedded by the social network plugins on website pages. Hopefully this will help somebody find and fix the issue.
With social network plugins essentially everywhere today anybody or any company supplying a browser for consumption by the general public needs to add a couple of iframe and social network plugin test cases to their testing schedule to catch issues like this.

Jan 18, 2012 3:55 AM in response to Stephen Bennett1by JimHdk,Presumably you have sent this information to Apple as well as posting it in this user-to-user forum?
Go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html to report it.
