Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

When you went to the Apple store, what did they say?

    Why didn't you go back?

I suggested uninstalling USA Today as a diagnostic measure.

You can also access a very nice version of USA Today at http://optimus.usatoday.com

Could you let me know if that crashes Safari and/or any other webkit based browsers on your system like Atomic Browser?

You are also welcome to call Applecare if you don't want to go into the store.

I've always wondered why that "computer app" version doesn't have all the sections.

sorry, raymondfromwoking, I should have said the Apple genius bar guy suggested restarting it once a day. I thought that was the same as rebooting. My mistake then.

My warranty is up now, Sam Katz1. Not sure how much Apple will help at this point. Maybe i'll swing by and talk to the Apple folk again. I think Flipboard crashed on me, but you know, I browse the web on that so maybe that's connected to Safari too. When I look at the Diagnostics log, it's all Low Memory warnings with Largest Process: MobileSafari.

I rather wish I could go back to the previous OS as it worked flawlessly up till I installed the new OS.

"By its very nature an average ipad probably gets booted >20 times per day in normal use."

An average iPad is not booted many times per day. Generally iPads are very rarely "booted". Putting the iPad to "sleep" is not "booting" the iPad.

As long as you reported the initial issue to apple within the warranty period the warranty will still cover your repair. Software updates are also supported. This was a bug which occurred because of a software update.

    Did you jailbreak?

Oh that would be good. Thanks for the tip Sam. I reported it the very last day of the warranty. I did not jailbreak, no.

At least it functions excellently as a reader! No crashes on my various book reader apps to report.

I too have been running into the same problem as everyone else here.  My diagnostic logs are filled with LowMemory issues specifically from Safari.

I'm really shocked Apple has not addressed this problem as it has been occuring for 1.5 years.

I've had to resort to using Opera Mobile which I detest.

I'm really shocked to learn that IOS-5 has been around for that long!

What shocks me most is that there is not more piblicity for this problem. Surfing the web is IPad's main sales feature and yet it crashes. Imagine the outcry if a car or tv just stopped at times.

Consumer Affairs and reviewers would be all over it and the company would have to re call the product.

I just want it fixed, and quickly.

    Try this.

And I am shocked to see how Apple kick me out of the forum because I suggest you are in their pocket. So, this will probably also be censored by Apple.

Scary to experience how this big company acts.

My iPad v1 Safari crashes alot also and I filed a bug report with Apple and had some followup.  They are aware of the problem.  We can hope for a fix in the future.

On my 3rd iPad 1 in 3 months.  I bought a refurb iPad 1 32GB 3G from Apple b/c my kids were monopolizing my iPad 2.  My iPad 2 has been pretty flawless, even with the iOS 5 update.

However, my iPad 1 would intermittently crash, just like everyone else.  Mainly Safari but other apps, including YouTube would crash regularly.  Forced quit running apps, reset, restore, hard/soft, upside down, whatever, would not fix it.  So they swapped it once and it seemed Ok for a while and then started acting up again in frequency.  Wiped completely clean, no apps, no nothing and crashed w/in the 1st hour of surfing on Safari.  Swapped again this AM at Apple store in SF and new one has old iOS, so plan to try to stay on that to see if more stable.

I use it for work and the frequency of the crashes/lack of stability is quite annoying.  Seriously my Win 7 desktop/laptops are bulletproof in comparison and their not dedicated appliances like this.  Really hope I can get a fix, still very happy with iPad's, but this is a serious defect.
