Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Just signed in on my wifes account, and apple is blocking her access to the message too.

    draw your own conclusions.

Yes. The same thing has happened to me. Blocked messages. I get them in my email, but when I click on the link to read the full comment, it say I cannot get access and to contact "my adminisrator".

Yes, me too. Sort of ironic that Apple is super vigilant about deleting forum posts but terribly slow at acknowledging a bug. I was looking at the forum terms of use, trying to figure out what he might have been violating, when i came to the last which basically says Apple can delete any post for any reason they please. All right then.

What the poster had said was that he contacted Apple; Apple had a support tech working to try and duplicate the issue and then to capture data about it via software; as you might imagine, they said if a fix were to become available, it would be released through normal software update channels... the poster expressed his opinion that "It's frustrating that Apple does not yet have a fix to offer after so much time with what appears to be a vexing iOS 5 bug (since the October, 2011 iOS release), but somewhat reassuring that the company appears to at least know about the issue." yes, I agree.

That benign enough a redacted paraphrase to not be deleted, I wonder?

Happening to me on iOS 4. With Apple so silent hopefully it's not a virus or malware issue.

I have the Facebook app and it is just as bad as accessing Facebook via Safari. Facebook closes soon after opening whether I'm using the app or in Safari. And Safari is getting very frustrating. It was bad before I updated to 5.0.1, and is worse now. Mine does seem to be worse on certain sites, but just about all crash after about five minutes if not sooner.

I have ipad1 with 5.01 and have many crashes on multiple apps.  The common connection seems to be the pop up keypad.  Could it be so simple?  Is there a keypad alternative?

hasn't occured with me and keypad. actually use a zaggmate which is handy.  just crashes

I think it has to do with the small amount of RAM and perhaps there is a subset of us that have RAM from a different maker?

When it crashes, go into:  settings,  general,  about, diagnostics and usage,  then diagnostics and usage data and you will probably see 'low memory" frequently on the list.  I think the operating system is too much for this older processor, and the lack of RAM.  Doubt they can fix it with a software upgrade.

Well I just got off the phone with Apple, they were supposed to contact me within 48hrs of escalting it to a Senior Engineer...2 and half weeks later, having left 2 voicemails with the customer representative who never called me back I got to speak with someone else instead.

The official response to my issue from the Engineer is that Apple have received a lot of similar complaints and are working on a fix in the next update as this is a recognised problem with the iOS5 update.

No idea how long this update is going to take but they did say it is a recognised software problem, only taken best part of 3 months for them to do that...great customer service Apple. In the meantime I've come out of contract on my phone and gone with Android instead.

Hey, something just occurred to me: if Safari is the cause of our issues here, could it be that Apple has to coordinate iOS Safari bug fixes with Mac Safari bug fixes for some reason? Could this be why any fix might be taking longer than expected? I believe a Safari update arrived with Mac OS 10.7.3 yesterday.

Well I just got my iPad 64 GB back from Futureshop, they did not send it to Apple but their own repair center. I sent it in to see if they could fix this issue, maybe is was a hardware issue. But no, the responce they wrote in the support email that they sent to Futureshop about what was done to it, just said that 3rd party software can cause crashes. So I take it they didn't spend any time trying to recreate the issue, which seemed only to appear after a few hours of browsing once you do a DFU restore. I looked at the logs and there isn't anything in them, which probably means they loaded a few sites, nothing happend so they marked it as having no problems.

Now the good thing is that the physical damage to the back casing has been repaired so now I can sell it.

If future shop fixed it then its fixed, why don't you test it for awhile and see if it recurs. For the good of the forum. Maybe it was third party software.

Oh I will be playing with it for a while. When I first did the DFU restore it took about a day before the crashing started to start. I re-read the email that the tech depot tech sent, and what he actually send regarding the crashing was that "3rd part apps can cause freezing," Don't know where freezing came from since I never mention that.

Considering this problem has been happening for a year, it started well before iOS5. I remember the crashing starting about 4.3 maybe iOS4 itself, but was significantly less frequent, like a few times a week to multiple times daily if not hourly in iOS5. Real shame that there still hasn't been a public announcement regarding this from Apple.

I have the same problem after upgrading to 5.0.1

I see that turning off java scripting stops the crashing on one site, but disables its functionality.

Try getting flight information at southwest without the departure/arrival dates ...

This is easily reproducible - it worked fine in 4.x.x.

I intend to return my ipad to Apple if this cannot be fixed or addressed.
