Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Anybody here tried another browser engine (e.g. Opera) like I suggested in this thread:

I downloaded Atomic web browser and it works great. No crashing.

I spoke too soon about my CrashPad meeting customer expectations. Arghhhhhh! The recommended suggestions do ZERO good.

The thing that really puzzles me is this: Apple clearly knows that they have created a serious problem which is and will have an impact on reputation, sales, and customer loyalty. I am not at all a techie, but if they even told me how to go back to a previous edition of whatever it was I updated -- the thing that causes my CrashPad to malfunction -- I would be happy with that.

There is something inherently wrong with an organization that even requires people like me to try to seek out answers in techie forums. The unquoted phrase -- safari crashes on ipad -- gets 919,000 hits on Google. Will they have a party when they get to the million mark?

@Mrsstrom: great for you that "Atomic web browser" is working, I did not know it, but you might check with the guys if they use another "rendering engine" than the one which comes with the apple libraries.

@Cthehill: This was acutally no response to my post, can you please check if "opera" is working for you.

I only want to rule out the possibilty that your "iPad" is crashing and it is acutally the Safari rendering engine aka WebKit.

@Cthehill: Thanks. Do you mean the bundeled YouTube application from Apple, or the one from Google (YouTube).

Last one is a so called "Browser" App. it is embedding a optimized mobile website in a UIWebView (WebKit), as a result it is also crashs.

Ohh and do not forget to powercycle the iPad, if you did run any web applications and my implication is right, than most applications will begin to crash after using Mobile Safari or any other Browser, which uses Apples "Rendering Engine".

Well I'll be taking my iPad back to Futureshop this week, they don't have any obligations to replace it since my extended warranty with them is just for repair, but hopefully if i send it in enough times they'll be force to replace it under their no lemons policy.

All web browsers are gona crash, Atomic, Dolphin..etc all use the Webkit rendering engine, which is I believe is what is bugged. Opera should not crash because it does not use Webkit, all website get pre-rendered on their servers. But because we are seeing pretty much every app crashing it could also crash. So we're pretty much stuck.

Clearing cache, restating the iPad will not solve the issue, it can aliviate the crashing for a while like doing a DFU will.

@Raingod: Point is if every app crashes:

    - than every app used, had a UIWebView (WebKit)

    or

    - you allready did ran out of memory and it was not cleared by the OS, as a result every other app. will be automatically closed.

This is right if you assume that WebKit or its interface is the cultprit.

So using only opera and not using any WebKit enabled view should reduce crashes to a minimum.

Sascha - These are details which have no interest to me, and I really don't want to spend time comparing and contrasting. And as far as I know, a "powercycle" is something at a gym. I'll just use my Crashpad as a paperweight that plays music. Thanks, though.

@Cthehill Sorry if I confused you I only wanted to help.

Nevertheless power cycling has nothing to do with the gym:

Please help us, Apple Geniuses. I don't really care if anybody else is having same problem, unless it takes more than the last COUPLE HUNDRED PEOPLE (!!!) I've read about [ALREADY!!!] to get somebody to DO SOMETHING! [NOW!!!] LOL

Same thing is happening to my iPad & my girlfriend's iPad.  Both are 1st generation & worked fine for the first year or so.  We would very rarely experience any crashes at first, but it seems with each consecutive OS update the crashing gets worse & worse.  I've tried everything ... debug, turning off JavaScript, soft resets, hard resets ... all to no avail.  My opinion is Apple does this on purpose with each consecutive OS update to eventually force old users to buy new equipment.  Otherwise, they'd be more reactionary to the existing user complaints.  I had the same issue with my iPhone several years back ... kept performing worse & worse with each OS update until the point at which I couldn't even use it as a phone anymore.  The "promised fix" from Apple was so slow to come that I eventually had to upgrade my iPhone.  The new phone worked fine with the new OS at the time, but I'm not going to fall into the same trap with the iPad.  For most people, these aren't throw away devices to be upgraded every year or two ... you buy it to use it & expect it to work for longer than 12 months.  I checked my usage & diagnostic logs which I have sent automatically to Apple, and I am regularly expericing 15 to 25 crashes per day ... mostly safari crashes, but crashes occur with many other apps as well.  The longer I use it, the less I like Apple.
