Feb 13, 2012 11:05 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Balian,This is such a major pain. I love my ipad 1 but it is now a source of consternation as Safari crashes constantly. ***? When are we going to get a fix? Does ANYONE have any info from Apple?

Feb 14, 2012 7:42 AM in response to Rob Bruenby RI-Red,I can't believe this, I found this thread after trying to start a new conversation regarding my problems with my new Ipad. Only Safari keep crashing on Apple's on Support page. I am so sorry I spend $700 for this door stop! below is the message I have been trying to post.
I love hate my iPad. It could be months before I no if leaving windows is worth it. Apple deliberately makes it impossible to conveniently operate within both environments cohesively, even when you are attempting to migrate from one to another. For entertainment or communications it is wonderful; however I am struggling with home office use. I am a retired secretary of an IT Department and my new iPad has made me feel like a complete idiot. When working on any of my "Office Docs" I have to do them on my PC, save and email them to my iPad. .Which I can not edit. Then the issue with adobe flash player, so many sites require flash player and iPad does not offer a solution.
I'm sure there are solutions out there, but thats the problems there is so much that I have to learn and I can't find "Transitional" help. And Apple's response seems to be "what's a PC" and who's Adobe"; if it doesn't exist than there is no problem, and/or it has nothing to do with Apple.
Like it or not I speak "PC" and to not help me correlate, compare and suggest alternatives is to say my life and career before my iPad purchase didn't exist.
As I said before I worked in an IT environment, and I never heard of any of these difficulties with Adobe, Printing and Document Sharing. Perhaps because the technicians I worked with use computers for a different purpose and they would not have the same issues that I would have in "Office Admin".
The app's and software that I have used successfully I love, and I believe once I learn the Language and the Process Flow of Apple products I will thoroughly enjoy my iPad. I provide a lot of IT advice to my family and friends, However I would not recommend an iPad to any of my friends or family, it is to much to learn and the "Transitional" help is just not there! And yet the **** thing is tied to my wrist! I love it as a plaything, but so far it has proved to be an expensive toy.

Feb 14, 2012 3:03 PM in response to Balianby TommieE,Same situation here. iPad 1 which now crashes continually running Safari. Have been to my local Apple store ad spoken to a Genius only to be told "we know" and "we can't do anything". Nightmare service and very unexpected given my previous Apple dealings.

Feb 14, 2012 8:32 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Patrick Young3,Same problems here with an iPad 1. It nearly useless now. I did a restore and it seemed to work OK for about a day and then back to crashing just about every 5 minutes on anything but the most basic web pages. This is a giant step backwards with iOS 5.

Feb 14, 2012 11:58 PM in response to Patrick Young3by Mrduttz,I disagree that iPad 1 is "nearly useless now". My iPad 1 is with me all the time and it enables me to do far more than just browse the internet. Safari does often crash and that can be a pain but you can usually restore your last session immediately. I have confidence that Apple will eventually address this. I just need to be patient. I would rather a quality fix than a "rush job".

Feb 15, 2012 8:45 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Tahoeapple,I just went to the Apple genius bar with the same problem and they said it was a known problem with Safari and that it would addressed with the next release of IOS. I presume the update will come with the iPad 3 release in early March. Because I bought the extended warranty with my iPad1 they gave me a new iPad1 on the spot which worked great for a few days and now has the same problem. Nice to have a new iPad (with new battery etc.) but the problem is still there. I like Apple, and everytime I have bought an extended warranty they have always given me a new device whenever I have a problem over the years including a new Macbook pro, an iPhone, and 2 iPads. It's a great company and if you want complete peace of mind always buy the extended warranty.

Feb 15, 2012 11:11 AM in response to Tahoeappleby Sam Katz1,Did anything change between those few days and the crashing? New apps that you installed? Websites visited?
People have reported success with Atomic browser, you may wish to try that until this is fixed. debug console in safari also seems to help people.
I am unsubscribing from this thread now that there has been enough interactions from Apple to say that there is a problem. I will unsubscribe eventually, but will wait to see your response.
There have also been a number of reported successes. Those interested may want to read the thread to find out what those were.

Feb 15, 2012 11:46 AM in response to Rob Bruenby gogega,Today I was on the phone with an genius at "Fast Lane Support" (from Germany, European Support) as i'm also experiencing lots of safari and app [LowMemory] crashes with iPad 1 iOS 5.0.1. The genius seemed very cooperative, although he was staggered by my problems as I had been the first person (?!?) to him mentioning these issues. Got the full restore advice, elsewise got an new device in prospect. So I decided to probe the causes before wiping and restoring iPad. I disabled all iCloud-Services, then re-enabled syncing Calendar, Contacts and Photostream (had also Reminders and Notes in sync before). I limited Spotlight to only show Apps, Contacts and Music. As a final step I enabled the Debug-Console within Safari. iPad seems a lot snappier now for the moment and Safari doesn't crash even on sites like engadget.com. I will keep this in sight for the next days.
In my view iCloud is the main cause of the iPad 1 issues with iOS 5.x, as iCloud needs (too) much of the (very limited) memory the iPad comes with.
Regards,
gogega

Feb 15, 2012 3:25 PM in response to Sam Katz1by Tahoeapple,I wasn't using the cloud before so that wasn't my issue. To try to self fix the problem I did all the shut down, hard and soft resets, cleared histories, caches, closed applications, and restarted many times and only got temporary relief. The problem would always return. That's when I went to the genius bar. When they gave me the new iPad the genius backed me up in the cloud and then had me bring it all back on the new Pad, but he warned me not to bring back my original Safari because he had put a fresh install on the iPad and said Safari was the culprit. It worked for a day and then the problem started back again (sigh). I don't go on more than a handful of sites everyday. CNBC, WSJ, Marketwatch, AOL, Yahoo. When I go on CNBC.com that website really has problems with the iPad. Just did another shut-down, started up de-bug console, a few minutes ago and it says no problem but then CNBC hangs up again when I try to go to another page. So the problem is back. Just hoping Apple gets the fix out to us soon!

Feb 15, 2012 9:08 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Cthehill,On my iPad1, Safari just turns off. On my wife's iPad2, it freezes.
We don't use the Cloud.
I looked at the unquoted Google search term - safari iPad crash - and there were 3.6 million hits.
Glad I don't own stock.

Feb 15, 2012 9:31 PM in response to Cthehillby Tygar Prawns,I know that this sounds really stupid, but I am one of those that had an ipad that crashed all the time. I was ready to go into an Apple store and play frisbee with my ipad.
Today i went in and they ran a diagnostic and then told me I had too many applications open.
I said "what?". I don't understand...
Well, when you double hit in rapid succession the home button, it opens up all your open applications at the bottom.
When you hold on one, they shake and shake and shake. At the same time, there is a little 'negative' symbol in the top left corner of each application. You start hitting these, it will close those applications open. This should free up memory in the ipad.
Now, I have only had this for one day, but I am hopeful that this will solve my problem and now be able to at least surf a web page without crashing my ipad.....
At least I am hopeful now that I don't have to play frisbee, b/c I am not all that good with it...
Cheers!

Feb 15, 2012 11:40 PM in response to Tygar Prawnsby Bugfixer,The stupid thing is the phrase "too many applications open". iOS has to care about it and load/unload applications from RAM.
The presesence of the icon of the app in the app bar just tells you that the app was previously opened, that's it. And if the app data is available, it starts faster. If not, it will restart.
That's a stupid Apple Store diagnostic.
