Feb 17, 2012 12:01 PM in response to J jrby Raingod,Can you post the steps on what you did, in case it does resolve the crashing we have something to work with. My thinking wait a day and the crashing will come back, at less that's about how long it took for me to get my first crash. It could be caused by iCloud because the crashing didn't become bothersome until 5.0. In 4 is was extremely rare, it was happening like maybe once a week, and the crashing was only in Safari. So there might be a Safari Bug which has gotten worst because of iCloud. The rarity of the crashes could also explained why most people did report them until iOS5.
Anyway since my warranty with Futureshop only expires at the end of the year, I'm going to wait to bring it backin to the stores till the next patch gets release. I have started reinstalling apps, so far I've only had crashes in Safari.

Feb 19, 2012 5:01 AM in response to Rob Bruenby splodgebat,I took the advice given in this thread and disabled all iCloud services on my ipad 1. I am seeing an immediate improvement in stability - and although its only been a day since i made the changes, i have had only one "low memory" warning in the usage log, and no crashes. Before this the ipad was becoming almost unusable with safari.
I actually run two iPad 1s - one for work and one for the family. The work iPad has always had icloud disabled, even after the IOS5 upgrade. Strangely i have never noticed a stability problem with the work iPad.
My money is on iCloud as the culprit...

Feb 19, 2012 5:11 AM in response to Rob Bruenby splodgebat,As a follow-on to my last post, my son just asked "hey dad, what did you do that fixed the ipad?".
Just remembered that i did one more thing - in addition to disabling icloud i deleted the three email accounts that i use under mail. Its great to leave my ipad turned off on my desk and when i walk out of the house find that my emails have synced in the background - but maybe its using memory as well and hence contributing to low memory issues.

Feb 19, 2012 9:15 PM in response to Sam Katz1by Tygar Prawns,Disabling iCloud does not work. Done and still crashing up a storm.
I also purged all active programs in the task area (when you double hit the 'home' button). I have two other programs there: set up and email.

Feb 20, 2012 8:00 AM in response to Tygar Prawnsby Cthehill,Ditto. Ditto. Ditto.
Unquoted Goggle term -- safari ipad crash -- now up to 4,070,000.
Get long messages typed out. Safari crashes. Back to non-Apple laptop again.

Feb 20, 2012 2:17 PM in response to Cthehillby gogega,Do as I did. Turn iCloud off first. Reset all settings. Here you are.
If you need to use iCloud: Enable iCloud at the first setup assistant after reboot. Then set up Fetching Data for iCloud MANUAL as I described in my post before.
Good luck!

Feb 21, 2012 8:45 AM in response to gogegaby alohaglide,Hello. I'm not a big forum reader or poster but I saw this discussion and thought I'd chime in. The problem is annoying enough and I might have a fix. At least it worked for me.
In settings, iCloud, I turned off everything except documents (use it too much!)
In settings, General, Reset, do a "Reset settings".
When it's complete, the iPad will look like it's been wiped (welcome screen, etc.). This is scary!
Choose "this is a new iPad" rather than restoring. Finish the setup.
All the settings will now be reset, but your apps and data will still be intact.
I believe this fixes the problem. I think there was a corrupt webkit setting in there.
Hope this helps.

Feb 21, 2012 10:06 AM in response to alohaglideby Sam Katz1,I assume you can turn on icloud in the setup? or did you leave it off or set it to manual?

Feb 21, 2012 10:32 AM in response to Sam Katz1by Tygar Prawns,This icloud solution does not work for me. I have turned off all of the icloud programs in set up and the ipad 1 is still crashing like a drugie unable to get his fix.
I have also worked with an apple genius and their solutiosn for turning off programs "running in the background" also has not worked (unless you consider running two other programs too taxing for the ipad).
I will be going back to Apple and force them to provide me a new ipad with my 2 year extended warranty.

Yes, turned iCloud on with everything. I was hitting myself not trying the reset without turning off iCloud.

Feb 21, 2012 2:55 PM in response to alohaglideby aimeefromtopsham,I don't know if this helps anyone, but I have noticed that lately, whenever a notification pops up, my iPad crashes. I am going to try and disable it and see what happens.
The funny thing is, my mail never crashes, and my apps have gotten much better. Safari, however, is getting much worse. I have to completely clear the cache and history at least once a day and reboot it several times because it freezes.
I was told at the apple store that there was nothing that they could do for me and I was sent on my merry way. I really think that this is an iOS 5 issue, because my iPad NEVER acted like this before iOS 5 was installed.

Feb 21, 2012 6:43 PM in response to alohaglideby Mad Cassandra,I tried Alohaguide's restore fix and so far it's working. It was scary to reset it to "new iPad" but once it was completed, all my stuff was still there. Fingers crossed that it is still working tomorrow!

Feb 21, 2012 7:41 PM in response to Mad Cassandraby alohaglide,It's still working for me! Good luck. I've been using my ipad (1) so much after it got better. It's like a new machine! (touch wood)
