Feb 21, 2012 9:33 PM in response to Rob Bruenby PilotSmith,My iPad2, which was crashing often with Safari, developed a problem with the battery this week. Today Apple replaced my iPad2. I did not restore it from my backup but instead installed the apps from the App Store. So far no crashes. I guess that was one way to solve the problem! I also only installed about 1/5 the apps I originally had. Crossing my fingers that it stays stable until the next OS 5 update.

Feb 23, 2012 5:27 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Cthehill,I have tried everything suggested. I don't use or have many apps on my CrashPad1. Don't use the Cloud. Have sought to start with a clean slate, as suggested. Open a web site (such as the Washington Post) and down it goes.
The unquoted search term -- safari ipad crash -- is now up to 4,340,000 results. It will easily hit 5 million by the weekend.
Apple has a PR problem as well as a technical problem.

Feb 23, 2012 4:40 PM in response to Cthehillby Mad Cassandra,Mine is working better now that I followed alohaglide's suggestions, BUT before I tried that, I called apple. The technician assured me that they had NO reports on this issue. I told her there were pages and pages of complaints on the forum. She said she'd pass it on to the engineers. Gee thanks.... Good luck with your problem.

Feb 23, 2012 11:52 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Bugfixer,And now not only Safari is crashing, also all the browsers I'm trying crash; what I've noticed is a sudden slowness a few secondes before the crash (iPad 1).
IMHO the OS has a buggy library or something. I've seen also a crash of the Prefs, last week.
Looking forward to the next update.

Feb 24, 2012 1:59 PM in response to Rob Bruenby ckrankin,I have several iPads in my house. We find that they have been crashing since the update in the Fall 2011. Not only will Safari crash (just trying to look at airfares and it crashed every time, in the same place) but it will crash in the middle of game apps, my Google app, and the magazines I've purchased to read on my iPad (Martha Stewart, The Daily, iCreate, etc.) Very frustrating!!

Feb 25, 2012 3:01 PM in response to Doug4650by Cthehill,I had semi-intuitively done many of these things. The others provide a modest improvement -- no Safari crashes yet. However, even now there is a bizarre key-stroke lag time.
Apple customer service is not being honest or forthcoming.

Feb 25, 2012 3:25 PM in response to Cthehillby Sam Katz1,Have you tried taking your ipad in to an AASP (apple authorized service provider)? It is a lot easier to diagnose when the person can see the device. We know by now that Apple engineering is working on the problem, we have some (very good) workarounds, and suspect low memory.
Given this, your keyboard lag could be low memory. However, I would ask you to search for and create a new thread.
As a first step in this thread, could you post a screenshot of the system status app when this is happening so we can see exactly what processes are engaged?
What apps is this happening in? Does rebooting the ipad help?
Please link to the thread in this post and I will be happy to follow it.

Feb 25, 2012 7:57 PM in response to Rob Bruenby wdhutton,How I fixed my IPAD 1 that was crashing randomly using Safari under OS 5.0.1
I tried everything I have read here.
Turned icloud off.
Turned notifications off.
Turned location services off.
Tweaked the safari configuration.
Tried other browsers.
Nothing worked. Random websites crashed unpredictably.
Looking at the 5.0.1 debugging logs, every crash was preceeded by a low memory warning.
The list of running processes did not indicate that there were any extra processes running.
But it was clear that safari, which was using the most memory by far, was jettisoned every time.
What I suspected was that OS 5.0.1 just is not a very good fit for the IPAD 1.
OS 5.0.1 has lots of new features and in particular contains a new safari and new JSP engine.
This is always the case - the new OS has new features and updates or even rewrites of existing core applications.
The Ipad 2 has more memory and a faster cpu. OS 5.0.1 runs much better on the Ipad 2. Big surprise.
So what to do - Apple won't let you downgrade any Ipad back to OS 4.x.x.
But wait - I purchased the 2 year applecare - maybe I can get a new Ipad 1 which has OS 4.x.x.
That is exactly what I did. And guess what ... no more random safari crashes.
Yes - I occasionally still run into a crushable website - but this is very infrequently.
My Ipad 1 is now back to where it was before OS 5.0.1
Moral of the story : don't upgrade your OS on any Ipad unless you really need to.
And then, wait until you can see how the new OS is working on other people's Ipad and make and educated choice.

Feb 25, 2012 8:28 PM in response to wdhuttonby hobiz2,I too have a 2 year applecare. They told me that it is impossible to get an ipad 1 with IOS 4 on it, so they have sent me 2 more ipad1s with IOS5. I then told them that I wanted an Ipad2 which can handle this new IOS. They are emphatic that the applecare only covers hardware and they are convinced that I have a SOFTWARE problem. Well, my software problem begins and ends with their crappy upgrade. Despite the fact that my ipad crashes on account of them, they won't even answer my emails anymore.
So I spent money on applecare and still have a non reliable product.
Buyer beware.
Apple isn't interested in customer satisfaction.

Feb 25, 2012 10:03 PM in response to Rob Bruenby psu12616,My iPad 1 is also crashing when in Safari on content heavy sites since 5.0 upgrade. Genius at apple could not help. Said hopefully they will come out with a fix. this is unacceptable. Apple broke my iPad with their upgrade. Safari crashes all the time now. It's been more than 5 months and no fix. I smell class action lawsuit!

Feb 26, 2012 7:00 AM in response to Rob Bruenby deadpool_7,Good news (hopefully). I've gone 24 hours without a crash...
I'm using an iPad 1 and have had Safari crash regularly since iOS 5. It got so bad that it would crash every 10-15 minutes or so.
I tried the recovery mode restore that was posted here but that didn't work. I then tried the following:
1. Back up data to to iCloud first
2. Then: Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
3. Once finished it will have you set up iPad for "the first time".
4. Choose to restore it from your iCloud backup.
5. It will automatically download all your apps again, set your wallpaper, set up your mail accounts, etc.
So, 24 hours, zero crashes. In addition, when I switch tabs in Safari, it no longer reloads them. I can finally leave a tab without fear that my text will be erased ;)
Hope this helps! Good luck, all!
