Mar 5, 2012 11:00 AM in response to Porkupanby EssentialParadox,It seems the iCloud fixes that keep being suggested do fix the problem, but only temporarily. It's possible that playing with any setting in iCloud resets some sort of corrupted cache, which steadily fills up with data again.
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that a version of a fixed iOS comes out on wednesday alongside the iPad 3.

Mar 5, 2012 11:17 AM in response to Anrandoby twotom,I agree. I am not interested in reading about "fixes" that require my disabling features/functions that Apple has us understand are fully supported by the iPad. Neither are the software crutches...including non-native browsers.
This is a product defect whose fix must come from the people who created the defect.
Apple, get busy!

Mar 5, 2012 11:40 AM in response to twotomby PilotSmith,My iPadn 2 was good BEFORE I upgraded to OS 5. Then it got flakey with many crashes with browsers and a few with other apps. Couple weeks ago my battery developed a problem and I got a new replacement iPad 2. I did not restore anything from my prior iPad and set it up as a new unit. Worked great for a coupke weeks and now it has started to crash again. Very disappointed in the utter lack of response from Apple.
I was planning to buy an iPad 3 for the higher res screen but after this fiasco I will probably not. I am also peeved that Safari can't even format major web sites properly. For example, FaceBook posts with videos do not format properly and you can't read the first comment about the video. Mercury and SkyFire browsers don't have those formatting and display problems. There are other display problems with Safari such as not being able to scroll down on some pages. There is no excuse for the FaceBook formatting problem. The lack of Flash, despite its inferior format, is also very disappointing.
I owned an iPad 1 and now an iPad 2. I don't see an iPad 3, 4 or 5 in my future. When I pay a premium price for a device it is with the intention that I will get a premium product and support. That has not been the case with the iPad. I have been 110% satisfied with Apple's service for their laptops and computers. However, whoever is in charge of their iPad devision needs to be fired yesterday.

Mar 5, 2012 2:40 PM in response to Mrduttzby Anrando,When you say that the iPad is no brick, and that other apps work quite well I disagree. my photomerge app which is my primary use for my iPad, ie, as a photo storage and retrieval system in the field crashes after viewing a dozen or so high res photos. It did NOT do that prior to ios upgrade. Clearly there is a ram handling problem in ios 5.0.1, and yes, except for playing music my iPad is a brick.

Mar 5, 2012 3:53 PM in response to Rob Bruenby aimeefromtopsham,I'm wondering, could interference cause the iPad and iPhone to crash?
The reason why I'm asking this question is because my electric company installed what is called a smart metre in October. Which is right around the time that iOS 5 came out. The smart metre sends your electricity usage via radio waves to the electric company. Both my iPad one and my iPhone 4s crash quite often. I didn't think of it until my sister came over with her iPhone and it kept crashing whilst she was at my house. Hmmmm......

Mar 5, 2012 8:39 PM in response to Rob Bruenby lbspartanburg,This is simply out of control. No software update for this issue or for old pages loading when using the back button. Congrats to Apple for the 25 billionth app download...I'm pretty sure I had my 25 billionth crash today. Any idea if a software update will come with the new iPad release?

Mar 6, 2012 2:24 AM in response to Rob Bruenby peter462,Have followed this issue with interest in the past as I have also experienced frequent IPAD crashes. I stopped monitoring this post at about page 28 comforted only by the knowledge that it probably wasn't me at fault. Flabbergasted that the thread is now up to page 49 ! Is that a record ? Anyway, I have two observations to make:
1. A previous post suggesting interference from a smart meter ........ I too had one installed recently and it roughly coincided with my suddenly not having the regular crash any more.
2. Re point 1., I suspect my crash problem was alleviated by firstly closing all background applications and then properly turning the device off (ie not putting it to sleep and on charge like I normally do). Turn back on and no more crashes until yesterday (roughly 3 weeks). Previously I had them as regularly as every few minutes mostly but not always involving Safari. Same closure routine yesterday when the crashes re-appeared and no problems today.
Like everyone else, I hope there is an acknowledgement and fix in the next day or so but if not, my IPAD is again workable.

Mar 6, 2012 12:51 PM in response to peter462by aimeefromtopsham,You are very lucky if your metre isn't causing problems. I have been fighting with my electric company to fix mine for a couple of months now. I am half way up the street posting this as I can't at home. Even my 4s crashes all the time now, too. It doesn't matter what I do - I have tried all the fixes, but none work. Maybe I'm not standing on my head correctly. (posted on my phone about 20 metres from my house) (it's cold out here - I wished I typed faster)

Mar 6, 2012 12:58 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Raingod,Well I think we can all agree that they suppose fixes are not fixes, they just alleviate the problem for about 24hrs, that's how long it takes the crashing to come back for me.
I also have a smart meter on my house, not sure how it could cause safari to crash, I could see it interfering with wifi or eve cell signals.

Mar 6, 2012 1:11 PM in response to Rob Bruenby Raingod,I should also say that I have submitted a bug report to apple, hopefully I will hear back.

Mar 6, 2012 4:21 PM in response to Raingodby lbspartanburg,Let's see, the thread has 49 pages, 733 replies and over 225,000 views. Hate to be sarcastic, but I doubt the bug report will help. Apple certainly knows about this issue but has chose to ignore it. I have become so frustrated by it, I am contemplating buying my daughter a non-Apple phone. I think they are losing touch with the customer experience...otherwise we would have seen at least an acknowledgement if not a fix.
