Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Just did a DFU restore and setup as a new iPad. Also did not setup iCloud, so will see what happens.

Sadly same story here.  Was hoping that 5.1 would fix it but no...

    My litmus test:

    Go to Apple.com

    click Mac tab

click on the Lion (not Mountain Lion) link

then click on the middle link for features of Lion.  Crashes every time.

Was able to recreate that crash the first time I went to that page, but second time it didn't do it. But nice to know that apple didn't fix the problem.

I've had one crash in 3 hours. They also fixed the issue with hitting back in the browser bringing to a really old version of the page.

So in order to figure out whether they fixed it in ios 5.1, it really must be:

    * an itunes install of ios 5.1 (not OTA) as OTA only installs the changes

    * it should preferably be not restored from backup as that will carry caches that may be corrupt (if you do not wish to restore, then try one above.)

    * you should try clearing cahes (website data) one last time before launching safari, mail etc.

You may want to ask the apple store to perform the upgrade for you/perform it again, so that they can be aware of what results.

If it crashed once, but not the second time, I'm guessing that the first one pulled from the web, and the second one pulled from cache or vice versa. If it continues to happen, do we have any data or flexibility as to the size of the cache?

No crashes doing this with my iPad 1 after upgrading to iOS 5.1, but I'll keep testing it. I did the update by connecting the iPad to the Mac via a USB dock cable and downloading the update through the Mac's Ethernet connection. It took quite awhile. After completing the update, I let iTunes back up the iPad and later, closed all suspended Apps and shut down. Then, I rebooted the iPad and started Web surfing.

Oops. It's not the "middle link for features of Lion..."

It is the "What's New" (middle-left) link that cause the Safari crash on this Apple Web page. There is no link for "features of Lion." But I am getting it too with the "What's New" link (and Debug Console on or off).

To be sure, My iPad 1 hasn't been crashing all that often since I reset it and then reinstalled all the software from scratch back in early December. While it has been crashing occasionally, it isn't as often as the worst cases on this thread (knock on wood).

Did upgrade. No cure. Maybe better, but crashing.

I did the upgrade too and checked out my usual test the Apple site Lion video, crashed every time. When I tried it the first time it crashed after the upgrade; however, I neglected to follow all the directions on another thread. You must do a full power off and restart. Works great, video plays every time. Try it.

Strangely, I tried your litmus test on my iPad1 without the new release installed and the page loaded fine.

Will retry once I load the new version.

Does it take this issue being highlighted on CNN news channel before they take action.

Apple needs to fix safari and lets stop all this talk of using workarounds. There is a fundamental problem with Safari stability and I am sure hundreds of thousands have the same issue but have been willing to accept it or just havent discovered this forum yet. For a company worth billions this is poor quality control in their software release. Sorry but companies a thousand times smaller are able to solve such problems or even publish temporary workarounds. CrApple offers us nothing.

Now to the serious issue...this will be my LAST apple product I buy. We should organise a boycott of CrApple till they solve this problem. Companies only take notice when it hits there bottom line or risk their image being ruined.

What if everyone who is experiencing this problem points a video camera at the device while crashing and we start a YouTube channel. The only way Apple will ever deal with this is if there is actually some media attention paid to it.

Could you open up a new thread about your installation issue? It will eventually succeed when the traffic lifts, I am sure.

Do you want us to help you fix this problem?

I do have some some questions for you

    1. How did you update the OS? OTA (over the air) or through itunes?

    2. Did you do a restore from backup (computer or icloud?)

    3. Did you power cycle the device and empty caches before launching Safari for the first time?

    4. Do you have any other wireless devices in your home, like a smart meter? Anything unusual that might be providing interference? In other words, does it crash both at your home and at other places?

I would encourage all of you who haven't seemed to solve the problem with the OS update to return to the apple store and ask them to see whether they can fix your problem now that the update is out.

P.S I thought of something. Make sure that itunes is up to date before running the update through itunes.
