Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

The OSX Lion What's New page does crash, but not all the time. If you want a site that will crash every time, this is one that was posted a few pages back try the Lyctro Review on The Verge http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/29/2821763/lytro-review

The site will load, the blue loading bar will complete but the spining loading wheel in the upper left corner will continue to work and then Safri crashes.

I will be writing and email to Tim Cook today, and the idea of doing a video sounds good will do that and put it up on youtube.

Yep, "the Lyctro Review on The Verge http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/29/2821763/lytro-review"

http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/29/2821763/lytro-reviewalso crashed my wifi ipad 1.

I plugged into the macbook, synced my ipad, updated to 5.1 over Itunes, turned it off and on again (I assume this is what a "power cycle" is; it actually did this as part of the update anyway but I did it again), cleared cache, but sadly still the crashing. Boy, I really rather thought this update was going to fix it, I've basically been waiting for this. I guess I'll head back down to the genius bar to see what more they might have to say.

My fellow mac using coworker asked if I'd be buying the ipad 3. Ha ha ha, I said, no way in ****. Although, in fairness, that's also because of the annoying I-am-not-a-real-laptop limitations of the ipad.

eta: the fiery place down under is a bad word to Apple? Good grief. How squeaky clean.

I just tried http://www.theverge.com/2012/2/29/2821763/lytro-review on my iPad 1 andit didn't crash. I'm running iOS 5.1.

Maybe try a reset or restore.

I've done so many restores and resets at this point that I can say that they do not do anything to solve the issue. KurtStu, does Safari crash on another other sites for you? The Lyctro review crashed my iPad before the update to 5.1 and since doing a complete DFU restore it has done the same.

I should add that I have written an email to Tim Cook, so hoping I will hear back.

If I have a lot of tabs open, it has been known to crash. Did you have other tabs open when you viewed that site? I only had one open at the time.

I have had it crash with a few tabs open and with it being the only tab.

So many issues here but no solution what the heck is this. How come no one from Apple support post any answers to this issue

After the latest update my ipad1 is crashing far more frequently now, I updated this evening and have had 5 crashes so far. Also, for the first time since October when it started the last crash has closed all the tabs I had opened!

What is Tim Cook's email address? I despair at this issue and the absolute denial by Apple that there is a problem. All Genii I have spoken to say they have never seen this problem before, and yet the guy ahead of me in the queue had the same query! Also when I referred to this site the same word for word statement was made, " I dont read the site as I deal with Apple issues all day and I want a break" or something very similar.

BTW over 213,000 views here on this thread.....growing rapidly.

Talking informally to a guy who worked at the store who sympathised with my plight hinted that it it is a known problem but would say nothing more.....seemed very wary.

For UK users Channel 4 news have posted (5 th March) for anyone getting this crashing to contact them.  Perhaps they are going to raise the issue on their program. Go to #c4news where a @benjamincohen wants a tweet.  I have pointed him to this thread.  But if more tweet him the better.

Hmm once the media get involved a technical problem will become a circus.

I put 5.1 on my iPAD1 yesterday and gave it a good workout all over and so far havn't had one crash, here's hoping.

I worked in IT for 35 years and without exception I can say that ALL major IT vendors frequently have similar problems and will never own up to it, but then things mysteriously get fixed in future releases. It's the blame culture we have today. There are also people out their who will exploit Fear, Uncertaintly and Doubt for commercial/marketing advantage, I suspect a few of these on this forum.

My IPAD1  (yes version 1) is/was a truly groundbreaking technology and is always by the armachair ready to provide service at a moments notice. Despite a few glitches (not unexpected in any technology) I even moved from you know who to an iMAC a few months ago. It's truly reveealing, the whole thing starts from cold with apps ready to use in half the time you know whos mraket share leading word processor just takes to load. And the fact the apps are less than half the price, so far with not bi-annual upgrade fees,  is also extremely quite nice.

Apart from thinkgs like Samsung/ETC/Android there is no other quality competition out there, just a few old steam driven things trying to catch up for a slice of the pie and inevitably in IT the bucket shop price operators. But then you get what you pay for. Where I used to work the engineers were changing phones every six months and laptops nearly every year, in a company not known for lavish internal spending. Wh,y because the the rubbish they buy is simply not good enough for them to work optimally and reliably. Even now they still have Apple phobia and continue breast feeding their IT needs from you know where. Oh well some people never learn.

So far, I feel like my iPad 1 may be more stable since the update, but I also wonder if a clean re-install of iOS 5.1 from scratch would help resolve any lingering issues. I plan to do this once my 2012 iPad arrives (it just shipped from Shenzen China).

I also would note that the first of the two-year, extended AppleCare warranties should begin expiring in April (I think?). If you still are encountering "Safari crashing and low memory" problems and are covered, make sure you have formally documented the problems with tech support (unfortunately, I forgot to purchase an extended warranty on my v1 model. I meant to, but never got around to it. Dumb, just dumb). No matter what the most frustrated naysayers here argue, Apple does take care of its customers, especially those with extended warranties. To be sure, this appears to have been a very unusual and protracted software issue and all the complaints are warranted, so I do hope everyone's problems get resolved.
