Mar 10, 2012 6:57 AM in response to Rob Bruenby mnwild99,Just loaded 5.1, it does seem snappier again. But I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere in this 53 page thread, the Safari crash test for iPad 1's is this link -
http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/#video-lion
Tried it with 5.1 on iPad 1 - instant Safari crash.
Too bad, my guess is it is a lack of ram in the iPad 1's. I just wish they would give us the option of going back to some 4.x version, so we could have our old iPads back.

Mar 10, 2012 7:18 AM in response to DDHighlandby Mrduttz,My iPad1 is also running much better. Multiple tabs open, switching between apps working and no crashes. Have turned off that annoying bookmark synching thing but apart from that have changed nothing.
One of the problems is that although many of us have the same device we will all have set different settings and be using different apps so it is very difficult for us to compare and see the actual underlying issue.

Mar 10, 2012 7:35 AM in response to mnwild99by lbspartanburg,Bad news, my iPad 1 did crash on the above link to the apple lion video link. Much better news...only crash since the update vs. the multiple crashes per hour before the update. Feeling much better about my iPad...was beyond frustrated before the update.

Mar 10, 2012 7:39 AM in response to mnwild99by Mrduttz,Just as a matter of interest, I think this is probably the same video but hosted on the uk apple site.
Could be wrong of course.
http://www.apple.com/uk/macosx/mountain-lion/features.html#video-mountainlion
The link you supplied at apple.com does cause the ipad to crash but I can watch the vid on the above link.
I don't know what the difference is, unless its in the apple websites themselves.

Mar 10, 2012 10:54 AM in response to Rob Bruenby devilhunter84,I have been following this Topic for months now, because my iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1 crashed like mad. Six month old hardware, crashing like 30 times a day, in every web-related app.
All Webkit-dependant apps crashed, Safari, Pulse News, Alien Blue HD, Youtube, App Store, and countless others.
For those who still don't know, the reason for these crashes is a big Memory Leak in the iOS 5 JavaScript engine.
JavaScript related websites (99,5% of the Internet) cause the Javascript part of Webkit to crash due to Garbage in the System's memory; a JavaScript process in the iPad firmware cannot resolve some basic actions and throws up errors in the Log files. And these Garbage instructions can fill out the 256MB or 512MB Memory of the iPads in seconds, resulting to a crash.
Websites that rely more heavily on JavaScript cause this problem earlier (like Apple's own Site or this Forum here)
It's possible to turn off Javascript in Safari settings, however all other apps use the stock webkit with javascript enabled, which you can't turn off.
All Applications that relied on Webkit and JavaScript are the victim of this bug, making the iPad 1 or 2 with this Problem unusable for anything.
Some weird things that happen on this are:
- after a fresh restore, Webkit takes a few days to start crashing
- most People who had this Problem and exchanged their iPads against new ones still have this Problem, so it's even appearing on exchanged hardware
- weird: this Problem affects only a 'handful' of People, ranging from a couple of thousand to about 10000 i'd say, but the rest of the 55 million iPads sold to date do not have this problem; that's also why Apple does not know about this bug.
- crashes are reduced from 30 times a day to about 3 times a day when i turned Javascript off for safari, but they were not completely gone (another Memory leak elsewhere?)
After trying almost everything for a few months to get this problem resolved, i'm calling it quits on firmware iOS 5.
Being a small time software hacker, i've tried to replace everything Webkit related on the device in iOS 5 from iOS 4, with limited success. (Safari didn't crash anymore but most other apps stopped working)
Because i have saved m SHSH Blob via Tiny Umbrella when i was on 4.3.3 (if you didn't do this you CANNOT roll back your firmware), i have reverted to the 4.3.3 firmware a few days ago (when i learned that iOS 5.1 did not fix this bug)
Everything is working as it should, iOS 4.3.3 is rock-solid in every aspect.
Apple has lost me as a customer for iOS devices because of months of nerve wrecking and hundreds of hours looking for a cure.
I will now stay with my iPad 2 with the original 4.3.3 firmware that came with it as long as it takes.

Mar 10, 2012 11:37 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Raingod,Yes I was unlucky in that I didn't save my SHSH Blob, so I'm stuck on iOS5, but the thing that boggles me is why is hasn't been fix yet. There's only so many hardware combinations for iOS devices so it shouldn't be to hard to trace down something like this. But what really boggles my mind is why we are not hearing more stories of this issue, what makes my iPad 1 64 gig different from Joe down the street with the same device who isn't getting this issue? Either the issue is more wide spread and just going unnotice because people are not browsing the sites that are resulting in crashes, or simplex not using their iPads as much as the people who are noticing the crashes.
Or my other hypothesis, maybe it is a hardware issue, so in as defective hardware but that at some point in their production line maybe a different vendor was used for a certain part which isn't playing along with the software.
Another thing is that some are reporting crazy crashing, and other like me it's a few times a day not every 5 minutes. I did have that exact experience when iOS 5 was first release and I did a straight upgrade from iOS 4' my iPad was barely usable, Safari was crashing it seemed like every 4 minutes and it was the same for other apps. But once I did a DFU restore, my iPad became usable again even if the crashing was still happening, it just wasn't doing it every five seconds.
Anyway I'm hoping that my call with the Apple Tech will lead to some sort of resolution.

Mar 10, 2012 11:54 AM in response to Rob Bruenby Cthehill,The Lion video shows on mine with no problem. However, it crashes with simple, mundane things -- like signing in to this forum just now.

Mar 10, 2012 1:46 PM in response to Raingodby Tygar Prawns,I was also just contacted by an Apple Tech also after I sent a note to Tim Cook complaining of the crashes.
I am hopeful something is fixed on this, as it does happen at the most in opportune times.Pretty slow response on the original issue. Too bad they did not test the update to 5.0 more intensely. It is also unfortunate that we have to complain to the Apple president on the issues with a less than 2 year old device.
We will see if a resolution presents itself.
Cheers!

Mar 10, 2012 3:04 PM in response to Cthehillby Christof60,Okay, now this is really getting weird.....
I clicked the link for the OS10 video posted that was from the UK, and watched the whole thing..... I scroll down to the US version, and INSTANT crash to desktop... What the hel l?
So just to be sure, I again play the UK linked version, smooth as silk and completes... Click the US link and again, instant crash.... So how can that be? Both Apple websites, same video... Only difference is where the link comes from.
Apple better pull their head out of Chinas arse, they are going to lose their fanboy base if this crap continues now that Jobs is gone....
Utterly disgusted...
And yes, I updated to 5.1 and also have iCloud bookmarks turned off....

Mar 10, 2012 4:10 PM in response to Christof60by Cthehill,You are right about one working and one not.
UK? Okay.
USA? No way.

Mar 10, 2012 5:01 PM in response to Cthehillby Mrduttz,So if anyone has access to an apple tech this Lion vid thing should be a useful thing to highlight as it seems to be one item common to all the ipad crashes.

Mar 10, 2012 5:17 PM in response to Mrduttzby Tygar Prawns,I did bring this up with my apple tech that I spoke to. He also provided a good one that crashes all the time:
techcrunch.com
For sure this one crashes... it takes a while, loads for a bit, but surely comes to that so un so pleasant blackscreen.
On the postive side, apple is aware of it. Even the tech used his own Ipad 1 to duplicate the issue. I think they are just looking at the differen permutations on how safari crashes.
I sent off my crash logs... so they have the data... at least from me... let's hope with other's data that they can find a cure.

Mar 10, 2012 7:34 PM in response to Tygar Prawnsby Durak,FYI, safari in private mode works without crashing. I use it after I reach my crash breaking point.

Mar 10, 2012 9:27 PM in response to Mrduttzby mnwild99,UK video is not the same. That one is Mountain Lion, the US one is Lion.

Mar 10, 2012 9:51 PM in response to Durakby Catsman,Turned private viewing on and US site still crashed..........another theory blown.
