Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Not a theory. It does work for me. Interesting how many variations of the same problem exists.

I still have ios 4.3.5 (i just didnt update anymore) and happens the same.already a month or something.

As everybody says, happens when a page is loaded with flash things, or playing videos, or sometimes i wait to open the page and crush! I also dont know why this is happening.

Ok so i thought i had to update, thats why it crashed but, as i see i better not update.

    Ipad 1.

The day after iOS 5.1 was released I upgraded my iPad 1 from 5.0.1 to 5.1 . I too was having constant crashes on my iPad 1 with Safari. After the upgrade my crashes virtually disappeared. I had not gone through official Applecare help channels via phone, but Apple did contact me via email after I sent a "desparation" email to Apple. I was told today by Apple Support that Apple addressed this problem in 5.1 . I use iCloud, have iCloud iTunes, bookmark, contact and photo auto sync and all seems working together with Safari.

I would encourage those still having problems to either call Applecare directly or update to 5.1 . I did express my concern to Apple about the apparent lack of feedback from Apple on this issue and was told that phone contact was a viable means of reporting and getting feedback for issues like this. The feedback loop is probably the most important issue here!

So I just got off the phone with an Apple Tech, he ask me a bunch of questions about the crashing and had me gather up log files to send to him. He informed me that he will be sending everything to the Apple Engineers and that I should expect to heard back from them soon.  Scalla I also remember having crashing under iOS 4.3.5, i believe that is where it start for me but the crashing was happening a few times a week. Wasn't till iOS 5 that it became much worst.  Fogerloger I also seem to have gotten less crashing under 5.1, actually apart from the Verge Lytro Review and the Apple site I have not had any crashes yet. Also 5.1 seems to be a little speedier.

After giving Ipad1 a real work out over the weekend, it has definitely improved since the latest upgrade. It still crashes on some sites eg, USA Apple Lion Video if other tabs are in use. It also crashes some apps. However it is much less frequent than prior to the upgrade to 5.1.

This crash is not happening on ios 5.0 on ipad2. (tmz.com front page). Please post back after you have contacted apple support. also, "ditto on crashing" doesn't help -- specify a specific page and whether you had other tabs open (of course, in normal use cases, you always do.)

Apple does seem to be listening. But you must contact them through established support channels, (phone, retail) and the more solid of a test case you can give them, along with crash logs, the better off you will be.

I have listened and decided not to upgrade my friend's pad 1 until I hear that people are mostly satisfied. Most people do seem mostly satisfied, but a few of you are still having problems. Given the new version of the operating system, I highly recommend giving support another go if you are continuing to experience issues.

Mine still crashes instantly on tmz.com.

Anyways, my 3rd gen will be here Friday. I take the blame for buying a first gen product and I will have no one to blame but myself again when my next one starts crashing.

I have the iPad 1. It was crashing 10 times an hour for the last month. I tried every solution I could find in the forums. Nothing worked. Then I loaded 5.1 5 days ago. Not a single crash. Apple never admitted a problem, but they fixed it. Load 5.1.

Tmz big problem. All works if you turn Java script off but then half the sights don't sort. Where is Apple on this mess

I also have ipad 1 and it is a lot better after loading 5.1

I can see that tmz causes a crash still (38 messages on the debug console)  but it's not a site I need.

Some crashing in other apps appears to have been down to the apps themselves and recent revised versions seem to have cured that problem.

They did NOT fix it... The "crashing to desktop" might be a tad better, but yesterday I was posting to a forum, and since Apphole will not let you upload pictures from your iPad, I also had to open a tab for flickr so I could copy and paste the URL for them in the thread.... After 4 paragraphs of typing, then adding 7 picture links via process I described, when I went back to the Forum tab every word typed was gone, page had cleared itself, pic links and all... Tried 3 more times. Same thing.

And happens frequently now on many forums...

Is anyone else having the page "refresh" when switching between tabs, and having their input cleared??

I guess I will have to go back to using a laptop, even for just surfing the web and posting to forums... Thanks a LOT Apple for putting out such expensive Chinese made crap that makes Microsoft look better all the time... Steve Jobs saved your company once when you ran it into the ground, it he's not going to be able to save your arse again!!

    Fixed for me now.

That TMZ site loads OK too.

I deleted Skype, but have all the iCloud services turned back on.
