Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

    My theory (and it just that) is that this will be fixed shortly... as it made little sense to completely fix the issues prior to the iPad 3 release.   What a great motivator to move from older platforms to a new more poweful one when the fear of memory issues are abound.  And the fact that it also remains on the iPad 3 is the driver to an eventual resolution.

    With regard to TMZ....it never always crashes there with JavaScript turned on (usually but not always).  Running an activity monitor will show that it crashes based on the intensity of the JavaScript activity (heavy pictures, video, advertisments and the like).  So its understandable that it might be solid for you at times.

    This sounds like this crashing problem just as easily could be caused by overly-aggressive Web programmers ignoring the realities of current HTML guidelines or hardware specifications. Or, is it just that Apple has not stayed on top of the all the Safari bugs?

    You may have a point. This discussion is rightly focused on iPad but Safari crashes often when I use it on my PC and the problem is getting worse. So is the problem the iPad or is it actually Safari?

    My new iPad still crashes near instantly on TMZ.com. So, it is not due to lack of memory.

    True.  All my factory apps are crashing periodically which is extremely annoying and frustrating.  I have multiple birthday calendars randomly appearing (now up to 8) and don't know how to delete them.  There needs to be a solution as this is an expensive and vital part of what I do each day now.

    Apparently it's a RAM prob for the pad handling media intensive site.  Workaround includes powering off and back on again as this get the pad to perform a memory consolidation.  Using the bar -double tap home button - and closing other apps down will also help the pad handle the extra load.  Sign of ram fatigue is where the application quits out to home page.

    So for me it's been pretty simple, or so it seems. Disabling Java lets me view the websites that are crashing Safari and one other browser App I have called Atomic. But in order to post a reply here I had to enable Java.

    I don't know if anyone from Apple actually reads these forums but I really hope the message gets through. Fix your sh*t or I won't be supporting Apple any further - and I have been since the Apple IIc.

    It's almost funny (if it weren't so ridiculous) reading all the "theories" of why this is happening. And I can't believe those who simply will fix it by buying an iPad 3.... Are you kidding me?

    If my son had not given me this iPad as a gift, I would have stomped the shiat out of it a long time ago. I'm fed up.

    I told my Apple Fanboy son of mine for years that I would never have anything to do with Apple... Overrated, overpriced, and way too proprietary with what they would and would not allow (ah, Flash?)... So when he gave me the iPad, I was enthralled... What a cool piece of tech!! My top of the line laptop got zero use... I then upgraded my phone from Android to iphone 4 so we could facetime. Then, as I started learning how to use the iPad, I started learning it's shortcomings. I still love my iPhone, but this iPad (1st Gen, 64gb) is nothing more than an overpriced Kindle Fire. My neighbor has one of those, hacked it himself (64 yrs old and no Techno guy at all) and can now use any Android app... All for $199????

    My wife's iPad 2 I bought her for Xmas works fine for her, but she only surfs the web, never posts to forums, etc... But even when I use hers because I can't get done what I need to on mine, guess what? Hers crashes too...

    Bottom line, like I told my son so many times oer the years, Apple is overrated, and they are proving it more and ore every day.. But this time, when they are teetering on bankruptcy again, there will be no Steve Jobs around to save their arse....

    I now use my good old MS based Laptop that is 5 yrs old more than my iPad... At least it is stable... I can't believe I am saying that, but it's true....

    Good job Apple, you had a convert, and because you really don't give a shiat except for your shares being $365.00 each, you are losing many of us converts.... Jag Offs...

    I'm on an iPad 3rd gen right now and Safari crashes at least 5-10 times a day, buying a new iPad won't fix it.  This definitely seems like a Safari issue, seeing as how the other browsers I'm using aren't crashing under the same load.  Then again Facebook's new timeline format isn't exactly helping since it requires immense amounts of memory usage.

    Never mind, not but 2 minutes after posting this, a different browser crashed.  Yep, it's an iOS issue.  *le sigh*

    It seems that the "Safari crashing regularly" problem remains a vexing issue for some that can be difficult to troubleshoot and resolve.

    To be fair to Apple, we should acknowledge the dramatic drop-off in the number of crashing complaints being posted to this discussion thread since the release of iOS 5.1.

    Also, I have a new, third-generation iPad operated on the same LAN with another first-generation iPad used by my significant other. For the record, Safari seldom crashes her iPad 1. Though it crashed on occcasion after iOS 5.0 was released, it seldom crashed after iOS 5.01 and it has not crashed at all since iOS 5.1 was released. And I haven't encountered any Safari crashes with the iPad 3.

    In contrast, my old iPad 1 (purchased at the same time as her iPad 1) started crashing regularly back in late November and early December — about two weeks after I installed the iOS 5.0 update. By mid-December, my iPad 1 was crashing 10-15 times (or more per day) and so I reformatted it and re-installed iOS 5.01 from scratch, and wrote Apple's Tim Cook to complain of the extraordinary delay in the release of a fix. After that, my iPad 1 only crashed occasionally. Around the time the most recent iOS update (v5.1) was released in late March, I received the new "Retina" iPad that I had pre-ordered. As I'd long planned, I again reformatted my old iPad 1 from scratch, reinstalled iOS 5.1 yet again, and gifted it to my sister in Albuquerque with fingers crossed. She completed her own setup and has been installing apps and using it reliably on her home network for about three weeks now -- without a single Safari crash (knock on wood).

    At this point, I think the ongoing iOS/Safari problems now may be down to granular (Web site) causes rather than mere iOS and/or Safari coding problems. It seems obvious that the changes last fall in iOS 5.0 and/or the browser code did originally lead to the "Safari crashing regularly" problems. But now, it seems possible thay any lingering crashes may be affecting Safari when it accesses certain, incompatible Web sites.

    At least this is my most recent theory -- and it is only a theory.

    I suspect the drop in complaints is some of us given up. TMZ and other active sites crash consists fly since OS5 up grade in October.  Sad Apple follows all others into the Bermuda triangle crash site

    Hi,

    The last couple of weeks i have been building an web application for Ipad. I have been stumbling upon so many problems along the way.

    The plan was to build a webapp, I can not go more into detail on this on, but is kinda of an "image gallery". The plan was to load an huge amount of images which you could swipe through, scale images,... On top of that this, everything should be available offline.

    I used css to do all the animations and i wanted the GPU to take care of the rendering of the css. So this means alot of Translate3d, which does not make the known "memory" issue easier.

    The images i used where about 1400px x 2000px. I wanted to show 2 images each time you swipe.

    Encounter problems:

    -Memory problems with the huge images

    -Memory problems because of pushing these images into the GPU

    -FLickering, but this is common if you do not use translate3d

    -Problems of the gallery crashing when HTML5 manifest file was used, even after i fixed the memory issues.

    Here is what i can conclude to make the gallery work.

    1.Because i show 2 images at the same time I added dynamically 2 img tags and added the needed src to my images. Both of these images got a translate3d(0,0,0). This forced the ipad to use GPU rendering.

    IMPORTANT is to wait to attach the translate3d(0,0,0) until the imag is loaded, after that, i load my next image, like this:

    $(elem).attr("src", "xxx.gif" ).load(function () {

           $("#img" + 1).css("-webkit-transform", "translate3d(0,0,0)");

          loadImage2()

        });

    2. when i needed to show the next 2 images. i used this code before i created them dynamically:

       if (!isAndroid) {

            $("#img1").attr("src", "png/dummy.gif");

            $("#img2").attr("src", "png/dummy.gif");

            $("#img1").css("width", "1px");

            $("#img2").css("height", "1px");

            $("#img1").css("display", "none");

            $("#img2").css("display", "none");

        }

        $("#img1").remove();

        $("#img2").remove();

         Android has some problems with this, i think it had to do with the img beeing loaded into the GPU.

    3.Everything worked fine now, but when i used manifest file, it crashed again only on ipad1!?

    A mistake i made was to use PNG8 files. My images have alot of text and i thought this would solve my problem. Turns out to be a mistake. This turned out to be a mistake. The animations worked slow AND, worst of all, crashed when using manifest file...??? Ipad2 did not had this problem.

    After i replaced all the images with gifs instead, i realised the animations where much smoother and ipad 1 didn't crash anymore.

    After all of this, I was able to make everything work fine.

    Hopefully this is helpful to someone
