Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

Rather than wait for Apple I'd like my device to work now.

    Final SUCCESS!!

I've found that if you can see lots of disk space taken up by 'other' in iTunes (a block of yellow), and the device usage indicates it is almost full, then you will get crashing due to low memory. I've had 8.6gb of 'other' up till last night.

For me it was caused by having icloud match enabled for my music AND the  'sync iPad over wifi' option checked in iTunes. I found lots of duplicates and various errors in the music library after iTunes match was activated with wifi sync enabled.

In my view this is an iCloud related issue. In fact, if you turn off all music and cloud, I reckon you'll have no more trouble. But if you want iCloud and match, make sure you turn off 'sync over wifi' and resolve the duplicate tracks in the library.

After several hours now, my iPad 1 has stopped crashing with ios5.1  so I'm happy!!

will you post the instructions for turning off wi-fi sync? I don't have the issue, but it would be good if you posted these.

    Thank you.

Hi there, my iPad is still working fine, still has the correct disk space.

There's an excellent post on turning off wifi sync right here, complete with illustrations:

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16606686#16606686

Clicking 'apply' is the vital final step too easily missed.

    Hope it helps

Meh. My iPad has 40GB free and doesn't use iCloud, yet Safari crashes.

constaintly safari crash after upgraded to iOS 5.0.1 (ipad1), upgraded to ios 5.1. 72 hours already. not experience any crash at all. I believe safari crash on ios5.0.1 is a program bug. just upgrade to ios 5.1 will solve the problem.

Just give it a few days, iphone4newuser. It will start crashing again.  The update does not change a thing.  I have tried EVERYTHING anyone has suggested to fix this issue, but nothing changes.  This is not a user problem, this is an APPLE problem, and they need to fix it. I am beyond frustrated and am about to throw my iPad away. I have been waiting for months, putting up with the crashes, using my pc more and more. Ugh.

No kidding.... This iPad was my first piece of Apple, and only because my son gifted it to me when he got his MacBook Pro.... I loved it and pretty soon my Laptop simply sat and gathered dust. Nothing more than a movie projector.

But now, I can hardly post to boards, if I dare go fro a forum tab to another tab (even with EVERYTHING ELSE SHUT OFF), I return to the forum post I am working on and it's blank...

Now, I can't even use it to post to my blog unless I just want to type. Using quotes, adding hyperlinks, tring to upload URL links to add pictures? forget it. Same crap. Either the picture links will not upload, or, the page will freeze and Safari will crash, or my typing will disappear when I switch tabs...

Well I'm done... Going back to the laptop and this iPad will now be the dust-gathering piece of junk...

And don't kid yourselves folks... This is a forum on the official Apple website, they know exactly what is going on, and what people are complaining about. I have NEVER seen a more spineless group that won't at least acknowledge the problem, and let users know what they are doing about us... It's called "Putting the Customer first"....

They put the dollar first, bottom line...

I haven't move off iOS 4 and I am starting to experience crashes especially on Safari browser. I run 2 apps and the browser on my iPad. I've reset the device back to factory settings and run no cloud or other network services. Some days its bad others not so bad. My guess - As this issue is up and down and now appearing on multiple versions of the OS plus Apple are tight lipped on it, its starting to look like a hardware issue, a memory or processor problem at silicon level.

You're right. Just turn off Java in settings/safari and the problem goes away. Not.very practical however as most websites use Java so you'll find.that.buttons seem to do nothing on some websites.

There have been almost 26000 views on this topic indicating that apple does not care that their software does not work on yours or mine IPad.  Apple broke my IPad.  It used to work just fine until the IPad2 and the new os5.01.  Then over night neither mine nor my wife's $800 machine worked well.  Both immediately started crashing while on the internet.  And yes we did all of the following:

    Clearing Safari cache

    Clearing Safari Cookies & Data

    Clearing Website Data

    Turning off Java Script

    Turning off Block Pop Ups

Turning off iCloud (or deleting iCloud account)

Turning off or disabling all Spotlight searches

    Turning off Multitasking Gestures

    Closing Apps

    Reset All Settings (via Settings/General/Reset)

Erase All Content & Settings (via Settings/General/Reset)

"Restart iPad" - by depressing Sleep/Awake buttons, until red slider appears to turn off iPad

"Reset iPad" - by holding Home Button and Sleep/Awake button at same time, for 10 secs until Apple logo appears

This is software issue that Apple is ignoring.   I think it was broken intentionally by Apple software developers on the basis that one day it worked and the week after IPad 2 came out it didn't work anymore.  Sure, I love conpiricies as much as you do.   I, for one will not buy another Apple product until this problem is addressed.  Given that over 25,000 people have reviewed posts about this proble, I would say that Apple needs to fix their f@@ing software.  It's pretty clear there's a worm in the Macintosh.

Apple is a corporation. They have a culture of standing by their products. They do not monitor these forums, because they are for users to get technical support from each other.

Apple will accept your ipad for testing (in some circumstances), they will anaylyze your crash logs. There have been almost no traffic on this thread since iOS 5.1 is out, which reportedly fixed the bug.

If you are still having issues, you have the option of third-party or first-party options for service.

There are a few other questions I have. Did it break after iOS 5 or ios 5.*01*?

Have you worked with a technical support adviser? Do you have specific examples of sites that crash? or is it random?

You are either kidding, or extremely high buddy.... No traffic? At least 4 or 5 new posts in my in box every day... I don't have as many crashes, but hey, I know not to have more than two tabs up at any one time, no other apps in "tray" mode, etc....

You have a brilliant idea of just why, since "reportedly" the bug was fixed, I cannot write text on any of the forums I frequent, then go to another tab to maybe grab a URL or picture link, then go back to the forum I've spent 10 minutes typing, and it's blank, like I've never typed a word... I use my notepad app to coy and paste what I've written, so when I go back and it's poofed, just copy and paste it back... Oh, that is so much fun, I wish I had to do that on my PC, you know, that Windows OS piece of crap that everyone told me an Apple would put to shame?

Uh huh...... Like I'm going to spend more money when all I have had is problems.

Now my wife has had maybe 3 crashes with her iPad 2 I bought her for Xmas... Why? I have no idea, but maybe because she uses her laptop for nearly everything, and occasionally uses the iPad for email or surfing a page at a time... She is not a forum, Facebook, etc., fan.... She does love to read books on it....

So why do I have all the problems and she doesn't? Gotta be a Safari/iCloud/ios5 combination somehow... Shouldn't be MY problem to figure out...

    Done...

I am not sure if this is the proper place to write this, but many of my IPad programs crash...not just Safari, and my IPad version 1 was just replaced at an apple store.
