Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

I monitor a bunch of threads so it could be this is lower than the other threads.

But regardless, have you sought technical support?

Have you tried the suggestions in your thread?

Some of the testcases are reproducible by me, but most are not. TMZ for example loads just fine. (ipad 2, wifi + 3g 5.0). I have a friend with an ipad 1 running 5.1 with icloud. No reported problems. although photo stream is off, I think.

    Techcrunch doesn't crash my iPad1.

In fact since this discussion began my iPad has become progressively more stable; those releases must have done some good.

It is very rare now that Safari or anything else crashes. Anyone who still has problems needs to take their device to an Apple store for help.

I suppose one issue is that none of us are quite running the same machine; we all have different sets of apps, some of us back up to a PC, some of us AirPrint, some of us use iCloud, we all allow different notification centre settings. It must be very difficult to work out why a particular ipad is behaving differently to any other.

But I am happy with mine. It is the best device ever.

I agree with you that this issue has been fixed. My iPad1 is working fine on the latest release.

I think that anyone who still has problems needs to get their device down to their Apple store and demonstrate its failings. Ranting about it here does little good.

If my iPad1 works and someone elses' doesn't then it aint the operating system. More likely it's your particular setup though of course there could be a hardware fault.

A good business offers clear guidance to customers who have issues and concerns. In the age of the Internet am I supposed to get in my car and do a round trip of over 200 miles to an Apple store to be told what? Update my OS? Can anybody confirm the latest OS clears this issue 100%? Apple are not confirming, either the issue or a fix.

Yes, that's a Safari (Webkit) bug. Report it to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

They do offer help via phone, e-mail (informally), and via third-party service providers.

If you provide me your zip code, I would be happy to look up whether there is an apple authorized service provider in your area that can address the issue.

If you have not updated your OS, you must do so in order for the issue to be fixed. I would recommend following the knowledge base article on updating your ipad OS, which will inform you you need to sync, and transfer purchases.

I strongly recommend updating via USB, and then doing a restore. At a minimum, make sure all apps are up to date before doing the update.

Apple representatives have confirmed to other users in this thread that they intended to fix this in 5.1, most users notice an improvement. We are now on 5.1.1. I would not wait to update any longer.

I appreciate your efforts but with respect, I would like to hear an official comment and status from Apple. If the manufacturer can't stand over their device then what is the point? Before coming here I reported this issue via the official Apple channels.

To me it looks like Apple are deliberately keeping this issue off the radar. And the fix is obviously complex. Which would tend to somewhat confirm suppositions that the issue is hardware related. And Apple are attempting a complex fix via software (e.g. insuring certain memory areas and/or processor functions are avoided) something that usually never works 100% and generally degrades the software.

Have you updated your OS? Because that is always step #1 in diagnosis for me personally with broken ipads. If you have, then calling apple is the best way to get your issue resolved.

Let me point out that this didn't happen with prior OS versions, which points to an OS issue.

If you want an official response from Apple beyond private channels (phone, e-mail, etc.) then you are not going to get it in these forums. Sorry.

    Pathetic!

I have suffered with ios5 variants basically rendering my iPad 3g 1st gen, non-functional. Now I update to iOS 5.1.1 and IT DOES NOT fix the problem!!!!!

Apple seems incapable of even aknowledging that many of us have a real issue here. I repeat after using the device for 1 full day after iOs 5.1.1 update my browser Crashes just as much iOs 5.1.1  DOES NOT RESOLVE THIS ISSUE!!!!

Your ipad needs servicing. Please take it into an apple authorized service provider, and report the results.

Btw, I highly recommend restoring the ipad, and updating apps before any update.

My 3rd gen ipad was ok until the update to ios 5.1.1 then safari started freezing or crashing on sites that were previously ok. Other apps also started to crash occasionally. I have tried all the 'fixes' mentioned on this and other threads to no avail. I have no similar problems with safari running under ios 5.1.1 on my iPod Touch which seems to point to the implementation on the iPad hardware. From this and other threads, I suspect the Apple product and customer base have outgrown their development and support processes and 'ship it and (possibly) fix it' is alive and well in Cupertino.

My iPhone purchased in january 2012 was finally replaced after 3 visits to the Apple iStore by a Refurbished model after battery issues. Put the latest IOS 5.1.1 and now have Safari and App Store crash as soon as they open.  Wish I had my old phone with just a battery problem now.

Tried the online support to find out I need a support contract unless - get this - I FAX -yes fax- a copy of my receipt to them.

    Customer service is a joke.

My daughter was about tobunt an iPhone - told her to get Android. Apple is making its software and support too complicated for the majority of its users who are not software technicians. Just want a phone that works.

This problem looks to me like a software buffer overflow problem or possibly and more worryingly a hardware RAM problem.  I wouldn't waste my time with the various switch off this that etc. If we all go to Apple support in store or elsewhere maybe they will pay attention.  Refuse to leave until they fix it - even if it takes longer than the 10 mins they allot you in store!

You have three options for support:

    1. phone/per-incident ($30) doesn't charge unless they fix it, unlimited calls

    2. genius bar/free

    3. third party service providers

    4. applecare (if you can still purchase it, you should.)

    Thanks for the advice

However I don't expect something I purchase at £500 to breakdown within months and if it does I don't expect to pay to have to repaired.  Neither does the law - hence the consumer goods act.

I will be making my 4th trip to the genius bar this week, taking yet more time off work and another round trip of 70miles.  I will be leaving with a new replacement or my money back as per the above mentioned act.

Apple is making its products too complicated for the consumer market.  If everything works it's fine, as soon as there is an issue you need to turn into a software engineer, and work out the solution yourself.

It is clear from the comments in this blog that Apple cannot or will not provide the answer to his problem.

I did call the helpline.  If you restore to factory settings, do not download your back-up and still get the apple apps crashing - it is a hardware fault - which is what I have.

If the Apple apps work at this stage - you have an issue with your back- up.

Presumably you backed-up using Apple software though -so either way an Apple issue, the company should fix.

Looking at some other decent phones on the market, Samsung looks good and I hear their after-sales is pretty decent too.
