Jun 29, 2012 2:12 AM in response to Rob Bruenby benmc,I have been having exactly the same issues with Safari crashing. I have tried all of the fixes on this thread and they did help for a short time but nothing permanent.
I have 64Gb iPad 2 (3G), I had loaded the iPad up with lots of videos and only had under 1 Gb free. I have since deleted the video files and have 53Gb free. The Safari crashes have almost stopped and the iPad is once again usable. I have not loaded the Videos back on, but when I do I will ensure there is 3-4 Gb free at all times.
This suggests to me that Safari crashing may be related to free memory.
Hope this helps someone.
Ben

Jun 29, 2012 6:02 AM in response to benmcby martinfromforchheim,Supports my theory that the crashes are forced by bad memory management.
Unfortunately this will not help as long as apple does not fix the bug.
Just as you mentioned i as well try to keep some memory free at all times. Only i figured a real improvement needs more than 3Gb. Its more about 8 Gb. Anyway this is only a Pair of crutches since it doesn' t help all the time. And it minimizes the available memory against the specification.

Jun 29, 2012 6:15 AM in response to martinfromforchheimby Sam Katz1,It is possible it is caused by a corrupt icloud backup?
-
Jun 29, 2012 6:32 AM in response to Sam Katz1by benmc,I personally dont think so.
Hard Reset and restore from iCloud backup + load Videos (leaving under 1 Gb Memory Free) = Safari Crashes
Hard Reset and restore from same iCloud backup = A lot less Safari Crashes

Jun 29, 2012 1:03 PM in response to benmcby scvdesigns,Using iPad1 trying everything under the sun to get Safari to not crash = a complete waste of time
Caving in and spending the hard earned bucks for the brand new iPad with retina display = no crashes
I guess the latest OS plus the latest Safari is more stable on the newest iPad? And Apple just wanted me to throw more money at them?
They won.

Jun 29, 2012 1:41 PM in response to scvdesignsby martinfromforchheim,I that is just the point.
I was thinking about that solution too and buy a new IPAD.
But then i read some posts here reporting on crashes with the 3.generation Ipad as well. Made me hesitate again.
Very annoying this all.

Jun 29, 2012 2:01 PM in response to scvdesignsby Mrduttz,I'm amazed this discussion is still going on. I have an iPad1 32Gb and Safari is not crashing since the latest release.
I don't use iCloud for all my apps, just the calendar and productivity apps. We will all have a myriad of different settings and apps. I don't do anything special; I back up once a week and I use my iPad daily.
I really hope this isn't going to start happening again.

Jul 5, 2012 9:30 PM in response to scvdesignsby Tobori,It's incredible to me that for people like you the solution is to go out and buy another newer iPad. I have read several others say the same thing. Why would you support a company that does next to nothing to support products that just recently were so awesome and great? They release a newer product and they turn their backs on those of us that spent our hard earned money on their product only to watch it become obsolete shortly thereafter. I have little doubt that they release firmware that pretty much makes your current device worthless so you have to buy a newer product. Just the fact that they don't allow you to roll back the firmware is suspicious. Doesn't that just upset you enough to just never spend another nickle on their products until they fix your existing one? Why support this ripoff company? Can you really not live without an iPad? For me this crashing piece of crap isn't worth the effort and much less the money.

Jul 5, 2012 10:17 PM in response to Toboriby DDHighland,Unfortunately you are absolutely right. You can see by the 276,898 views this issue is still occurring and people continue to search for answers. As for me, I will continue to use my generation 1 iPad even with the frustrating intermittent crashes rather than pay even more money for a new one. My 1st generation worked flawlessly until the upgrade last fall. Apple knows about the problem but has still not offered a fix that works. It is very frustrating, the joke with my friends is "It just DOESN"T work".

Jul 6, 2012 12:10 AM in response to DDHighlandby Bugfixer,Well, it's not a "fix", but making Safari work with Private Browsing ON (in Settings/Safari/Privacy) I have a negligible number of crashes.
Another idea is use Chrome instead of Safari. It works very well on my iPad1.

Jul 6, 2012 12:32 AM in response to Bugfixerby Tobori,But you shouldn't have to do that! You should not have to turn "this" and "that" off. You shouldn't have to do ANYTHING! The device should work as advertised. We are not being payed as developers or troubleshooters. How often do you get "updates" on your apps? I get dozens of updates on just about every app I have purchased. Constantly. I can understand a couple of updates but I feel like we are being used as beta testers. I want something that works when I pay for it as it usually happens in life when not buying something from Apple. This is just not acceptable, and as long as you have people with money, standing outside Apple stores the night of the release of a new toy from Apple, regardless of the quality, Apple will have no reason to look back on previously released devices.

Jul 6, 2012 2:03 AM in response to Toboriby Bugfixer,I totally agree with you. Totally. And I'm upset as you are, but I have to survive and I look for solutions that can make me use my iPad until I'll change it (and I'll never change it for a reason like this).
Safari is just the default browser and if doesn't work we HAVE to ask Apple to make it work (as I did using the form un their web page); but if Apple doesn't want to fix it, I'll never spend money justo to browse. I just change the browser! The rest of my iPad works more than well, so...
I hope you understand my point.

Jul 7, 2012 8:03 PM in response to Bugfixerby Sam Katz1,I am confused as to why this is still happening to certain people?
That said, the ipad 1 is now two generations old, and end of lifed as of the next release. (ipad 2 is still supported and now less expensive).
I would still do a DFU restore before giving up hope. I would go to the apple store again, given that apple feels they fixed the problem in 5.1.
I would also start tracking how many times it crashes, in what apps, and on what websites.
Please follow my instructions and do the DFU restore.
It is apple's process for reflashing the firmware of the device.

Jul 7, 2012 8:33 PM in response to Sam Katz1by pdxlover,My iPad 1 improved after that last update, but it still crashes plenty with lots of low memory reports. I've just resigned myself to it as an annoying but sometimes handy piece of technology. Genius bar unhelpful. I sure wouldn't buy another iPad but this one is handy for ebooks and Flipboard browsing. Expensive for that. It was fine before the most recent OS.

Jul 7, 2012 8:38 PM in response to Sam Katz1by adapaw,People are still having this problem because Apple hasn't fixed the OS yet. DFU restores will not fix it (as evidenced by the numerous people in this post that have had no luck it). At the very most a firmware restore will only mask the problem for a short while. This IS an OS issue, which needs a formal fix from Apple, a fix that it has yet to provide.
