Q: iPad Safari crashing regularly

Safari on my iPad is crashing fairly frequently; sometimes when I restart it retains the pages that were previously open, and sometimes not.

Have not yet established a pattern, but it seems prevalent on very large pages (for example pages with many images) and on pages with embedded video (particularly Flash).

Anyone else experiencing the same issue and/or have any further information? Anybody using a browser other than Safari on the iPad?

Mac OS X (10.5.1)

You have no evidence that this is an OS bug. If you have not personally tried a DFU restore, or are unwilling to take the help provided to you, or even to do a regular restore, you are not welcome on this thread sadly.

Every ipad is different. It may be a hardware failure of some type (such as bad RAM or bad flash memory). It may be corrupt firmware, which is going to require either a DFU restore or for you to send it in to Apple for testing.

Also in my testing the ipad 2 with the URLs provided on this thread, rarely a page like the google+ page would crash my ipad, but the fact that an obscure thread on google+ crashes my ipad, sites do crash browsers all the time including on computers.

If you do think it is a low memory issue, and wish to turn on all the icloud features, both the ipad 2 and the ipad 2012 (colloquially referred to as the ipad 3) have more memory, are faster, more feature-rich and upgradeable to iOS 6.

If you do wish to send in your ipad for testing, or send in your crash reports, contact applecare, wait to get escalated to engineering, if that fails ask for "apple customer relations".

Good luck. You also have the choice of third-party service providers.

    1. What apps are crashing? If it is more than just Safari (like the settings app for instance), it suggests a wider issue.

    2. How often does Safari spontaneously close? (the only "true" crash)

    3. What sites (as specific as possible urls) cause Safari to crash? (Apple will want this.)

    4. Has your ipad ever been jailbroken now or in the past?

I have 63, well now 64, pages of evidence that this is an OS native issue.  This isn't some obscure thread in which only a handful of people have posted.  Hundreds of people on here (and other threads like it) have been complaining about this issue, from the first gen iPad all the way through the 3rd gen iPad.

I have tried DFU restores, 3 times, before you even mentioned it, and one of those was done at the Genius Bar, along with Apple replacing the ipad.  The replacement iPad (set up as a brand new device, not restored from any backup) still exhibits this issue, oh, and this is all happening on a 3rd gen iPad.

Also, when I went to the Genius Bar, the Genius informed me that he sees excess "low memory" crashes at least a dozen times per day, and the only thing they can recommend is a DFU restore and hope that fixes it. (Which it doesn't.)

Myself and others have posted crash logs in this thread to show that this is a widespread issue with the software itself.

I am an iOS developer, I know how to read crash logs, and I know my way through the OS better than nearly every device owner or general support tech I have ever encountered.  This exhibits every symptom of it being an OS bug itself.  It occurs on every generation of the device, it occurs on mutiple OS versions, and on thousands (because those are the only ones being reported on here) of individual devices.  Now could it be hardware? Yes.  But if it is a hardware issue, than the number of affected machines should be well beyond the threshold for a recall.  So let's both hope this is an OS issue which can be fixed with a software update.

Good day sir.  I'm through with this thread.

I have also done a DFU restore.  My iPad got worse after the new OS update.

How and why would you prohibit someone from voicing their concerns based on their experiences, especially someone familar with software development for iOS?  This is starting to look like a Scientology run forum.  I too have no doubt it's the OS that's causing all the problems.  Am I going to be booted too?

What does "end of lifed" mean?

I am sorry if I made you uncomfortable. It felt like you weren't listening to what I said. No one is going to be booted for asking for help. I have never used my skills as moderator.

If you have tried a DFU restore and it hasn't worked, your next option is to contact and suggest that they send the ipad in for testing so they can figure out why it is doing that. You need to get in touch with an engineer in engineering who can actually anaylyze your crash logs.

It should not be happening on an ipad 3, which has triple the memory of an ipad 1. (1GB in total.)

EOL (or end of lifed) means that they aren't publishing any more updates for a device. ipad 1s can't run ios 6, the next ios update.

Every person but one has reported that the new ipads do not suffer from this issue. I have not seen it on my ipad 2, except in one rare google+ post website.

With my iPad constantly crashing plus after upgrading my Mac Pro to Snow Leopard and it now experiencing 3 to 4 crashes a day I've decided to call it a day for Apple. Bye bye and thanks for all the fish.

That's lovely.  I bought my iPad beginning of 2011 before the iPad 2 was released.  So less than two years later, it is EOL, obsolete, worthless.  What a joke.  Can you imagine if support was like this for your car?  For your tv?  For your lawn mower?  "Sorry, we no longer make parts for your 2 year old car, so you must now buy a new one."

What a load.  Unfortunately there are many people who are just fine with this arrangement and as long as that is the case, Apple will continue to rake in the dough and us "average income" folks will continue to get screwed....IF we keep playing the game.

Not me.  Fortunately this is my very first Apple device I buy, and my very last.  There is no way I will spend another cent on something that is that expensive and has a 2 year EOL.  More like 2 year LOL.

Your mac almost certainly is suffering from a different problem than your ipad. Open a new thread and link to it here, so people can help you with that problem. I have done many snow leopard upgrades without a problem. It is likely third-party software.

I would take both to an apple specialist, actually. (a third-party apple service provider labelled "apple specialist")

Every time you post my inbox pings. That's fine if you are asking for help. But please think before you post complaints.

You can trade in your ipad at www.powermax.com or www.smalldog.com. When I did it, I got half the value ($290 for an ipad 1). You may get less now.

Apple did not officially end their support. It is possible you will see OS updates, but not super likely. We have illuminated the feedback mechanism of Apple. I would encourage you to use it if you are frustrated, but more importantly to get support if you feel you need it.

Even I sometimes call. They were great yesterday.

I have an ipad 2, launched an app then available memory drastically dropped to less then 20MB

Finally got the solution, it was Mail App. after deleting my Yahoo account from Mail App, everything just went normal,

    Hope it helps

It has nothing to do with 3rd party applications etc. The problems are present on a clean install. Apple have pointed out my Mac Pro is a 2007 model, considered in the EOL arena. Disregarding the fact I spent thousands on the machine and whose hardware is still perfect. I have no intention of taking the suggested solution - Purchase a new machine.

I'm new to this forum and not very technically minded I'm afraid.  I've have an iPad 2 since February and it's been working fine up until about 4 days ago,  when safari started crashing....every 5 mins on a whol variety of sites..l.lseemed to start on the day I went to the Sunday time site....happens a lot on classic fm site, but also on forum sites and even the apple site...I'm typing quickly now in case it crashes!

I have no apps to speak of....no memory issues, as no photos or vids.  I only use the iPad for browsing.

    Please can anyone help?

Might I have a virus or something.  If I reset is that easy to do and will it make a difference please?

Just to add...I reset my ipad completely...wiping everything off and putting it back to factory settings...and it has been fine since.  So I really think there muct have been some bug or virus on it
