Completely dead ipad - will not charge

Hope someone can offer suggestions

this is a 64MB wifi ipad I have had since 30th April. I love it and it has been excellent until today.

I had used it yesterday evening and it still had 55% showing on the battery - so it was just switched off overnight and left (no wifi running there is no signal where I am as we are away from home in our motorhome and I only charge it when it drops to 20%). Now it has been being charged bias it's mains lead via an inverter

When I looked this morning it was dead - I thought it odd but plugged it in to charge - only there was not the usual start up just nothing. And nothing still later

as I not home I do not have access to a mains socket or my computer

any thoughts would be appreciated

What should i do...?

Sounds like the iPad dying is a common problem. I'm wondering what happens to cause this to happen???

It happened to me today and my battery was at 85%, so like others it wasn't a low battery or anything that was or wasn't done to the iPad. I also was using it just fine, left it for awhile and when I came back it was totally dead. When this happens, it won't respond by being plugged in to the wall or the computer.

Fortunately the holding of the sleep button and the home button at the same time will reset it and cause it to start working. That didn't work for me at first but did wake up later when I was about to give up. It suddenly came on so I could stop having a heart attack 🙂

Thanks for the help received on the discussion. This board is wonderful!

People we are dealing with two different situations. Those of you who were able to restore by going into recovery mode are not faced with what I'm going through this very second.

My ipad won't sync, won't charge, continuously turns itself on and off by switching from Apple startup to red battery of death screen, will not restore in recovery mode, dfu mode.

If you're iPad actually syncs with your itunes when connected, and you're giving the option to restore through itunes even though it's not charging, we'll that's yesterdays news.

I think there is only a couple folks on this thread who are dealing with this issue. Like me for 3 days now of trouble shooting, have what I'm officially calling "iPad Ebola Syndrome"! looks like i'm getting a replacement iPad.

This could end up being a huge issue for apple and the iPad.

Many thanks from another happy iPad owner! Completely dead iPad, tried unsuccessfully to reboot by pressing the sleep/wake button... just needed to be patient and press both sleep/wake and home until it woke itself up. It's 86% charged, so it just put itself to sleep... guess that'll teach me to ignore it for a day!

Same issue here! We have an iPad that just all of a sudden stopped working. We wondered if it just wasn't charged, but it was plugged in for awhile and seemed to not take a charge. Pressing the power button did nothing. Tried this "home button/power button" trick, and we now have the charge symbol with the red battery...so at least it's alive! I'll check back in a bit with a report of whether or not it took a charge. Unlike others on the board, ours doesn't go to the home screen...only the battery, so it seems that it's not charged at all.

Oh, and interestingly enough...my Google search was "Completely Dead iPad", which is the exact title of this thread!

I have exactly the same problem as you. Mine occured after accidentally dropping my ipad from about 80 cm as I was bending over. It hit the corner opposite the charging bay.

Did you ever find a solution to the "My ipad won't sync, won't charge, continuously turns itself on and off by switching from Apple startup to red battery of death screen, will not restore in recovery mode, dfu mode" ?

Holding on the start and home buttons doesn't do anything, unfortunately and itunes won't recognise my ipad either.

I even opened up my ipad to see if any cables were loose.. and they aren't.

Strangely mine was working fine after dropping it.. it was only when it ran out of battery and i went to recharge it, that it wouldn't charge at all.. and keeps showing the apple logo.

Please help! i simply can't afford to pay money for fixing it and my guarantee is already over.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. In complete despair this morning when iPad would not go on with pressing reset and home and charging et al. The thing seemed completely dead. 3 gestures: Google search, Apple Discussion Forums, and a scroll down to the bottom with your reply. The 'holding 10 sec.' did it. Problem solved. Now THAT'S technical support! Thanks so much. AwWWWEesome support and help. You rock.

We had the same problem. The Apple store advised that a 12-watt charger is required. Our old cables worked just fine until recently. I'm not sure if it was due to the ios update or not, and Apple wasn't sure, either. They gave us the 12-watt, and the problem was solved.

This is the only thing that worked for us (copied and pasted from my previous comment). Hope it works!

I've had my iPad for almost 5 and half years now, and nothing has been an issue up to this point, until I went to France this Summer.

I was using the iPad to read on in my room, mum comes in talk for a minute, then I turn my attention back to my iPad, to find the screen off. I then found it would not turn on with the Home or Sleep buttons, after thinking it had just gone to sleep.

After calming down and trying to think logically, I thought the problem might just be a simple charging fault because it was getting on in years and that I figured the charge had been low the last I had checked, and that would solve the problem. Turned out leaving it to charge for an hour did nothing but warm the iPad a bit.

My brother then suggest the brilliant idea of going online and looking up if there are any solution others could provide and save my from this **** I've fallen into.

Looking through this chat room was a stroke of luck, I found a few different problem solver, such as:

  • Hold down the Power Off button, for a few minutes.
  • Press the Home + Sleep (Power) buttons down at the same time, 2 or 3 times consecutively.

These seemed to work fine for some people and their iPads but my attempt turn up with nothing. But what work for me was:

Hold down the Home + Sleep buttons for 5 to 15 seconds (about 6 work for me).

This work wonders to my delight, but I'm not sure if it worked so well because I tried the other methods before trying this one (?)

Anyway just give them a ago, it seems that an iPad can go completely dead whether you've had it for a few months or years like mine, and I still don't know way it did it, but for the time being I'm happy its working 🙂.

Thankyou, thankyou for this two button tip!
Had exactly the same problem - suddenly completely dead. Np reaction when connected to power or to computer. After holding both buttons for about 10 seconds started up with apple logo. Had 83% battery, so that doesn't seem to be an issue.

I have had the same problem a couple of times and I can offer this to "help".
iPad 64 3G
iOS 4.2 (or whatever the newest one is at the writing of this)
Both times this happened the iPad was at 85-89% charge, I had been using it normally, I think one time I was watchning Netflix the other, just surfing using stumbleupon as a app.
I did not shut down the iPad, I just put it down and expected it to "sleep" after 2 minutes.
In both instances I came back about 1-3 hours later and it was completely "dead" and would not respond to home or sleep/wake independantly. I plugged it into a wall socket and it did not respond after an hour of "charging". I had to do as others have, and hold both home and sleep/wale for about 15 seconds and it came back. When it did it was again somewhere in the upper 80% of a charge (85% or more)

It would seem that this problem is related to the "sleep mode" an active screen, and maybe a certain battery percentage (or maybe battery percentage has nothing to do with it, it just do happens that both times mine was at 85%+)
