Completely dead ipad - will not charge

Hope someone can offer suggestions

this is a 64MB wifi ipad I have had since 30th April. I love it and it has been excellent until today.

I had used it yesterday evening and it still had 55% showing on the battery - so it was just switched off overnight and left (no wifi running there is no signal where I am as we are away from home in our motorhome and I only charge it when it drops to 20%). Now it has been being charged bias it's mains lead via an inverter

When I looked this morning it was dead - I thought it odd but plugged it in to charge - only there was not the usual start up just nothing. And nothing still later

as I not home I do not have access to a mains socket or my computer

any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi,

Try pressing SLEEP/WAKE button and HOME button *at the same time* to force it restart for 2 or 3 times and see if it can turn on. Sometime it's just turn off by itself (happens more frequently for me esp when the battery is low) and we have to force it to start again.

Hope this helps,

I have had the same problem a couple of times and I can offer this to "help".
iPad 64 3G
iOS 4.2 (or whatever the newest one is at the writing of this)
Both times this happened the iPad was at 85-89% charge, I had been using it normally, I think one time I was watchning Netflix the other, just surfing using stumbleupon as a app.
I did not shut down the iPad, I just put it down and expected it to "sleep" after 2 minutes.
In both instances I came back about 1-3 hours later and it was completely "dead" and would not respond to home or sleep/wake independantly. I plugged it into a wall socket and it did not respond after an hour of "charging". I had to do as others have, and hold both home and sleep/wale for about 15 seconds and it came back. When it did it was again somewhere in the upper 80% of a charge (85% or more)

It would seem that this problem is related to the "sleep mode" an active screen, and maybe a certain battery percentage (or maybe battery percentage has nothing to do with it, it just do happens that both times mine was at 85%+)

Thanks so much for the 2 button tip!! I was getting real depressed!!! Someone is so smart!!!!

Lots of a smart folks here and, for the rest of us, there's always the manual ...

From the Tips & Troubleshooting section of the User Guide:

*Restarting and Resetting iPad*
If something isn’t working right, try restarting iPad, force quitting an app, or resetting iPad.

*Restart iPad* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
*Force quit an app* Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then press and hold the Home button until the app quits.

+If you can’t turn off iPad or if the problem continues, you may need to reset iPad. This should be done only if turning iPad off and on doesn’t resolve the problem.+

*Reset iPad: * Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

*iPad Still Doesn’t Respond After Reset*
+Reset iPad settings.+ From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. All your settings are reset, but your data and media aren’t deleted.
If that doesn’t work, +erase all content on iPad+. See Resetting iPad.
If that doesn’t work, +restore the iPad software.+ See Removing a Backup.

Thank goodness for this forum!

My iPad was fully charged, 100%! I went to my email, put the iPad down to do something in the kitchen for 5 minutes...came back, and it was dead. Wouldn't respond to anything. I tried the Home + Sleep button trick on my own, but I guess I didn't hold it down long enough, because it did nothing: black screen of death. Plugged it into the wall outlet, and nada.

Came online to check the forum (typed "iPad dead" in Google) and plugged in the iPad to see if iTunes would wake it up. NOPE.

Then tried the Home/Sleep button trick again, this time holding it down indefinitely until it suddenly came back to life, at 99% battery. WTH?

SO glad it's working, but what in the WORLD made it just die for no reason at all? And in case anyone's wondering, I had NO apps running in the background when I first set it down.

Does Apple know about this issue? Is it a known issue? Is it an OS bug?

Anyway, thank goodness it's now working, but no telling when it'll do the same AGAIN. Sheesh...that's one very expen$ive door stopper!

thank goodness for you guys, mine just did the same today, 80% charge when I was using it around 2pm,and dead as a dodo when I picked it back up after a couple of hours, I was more worried about the stuff I had lost than the actual ipad but the brilliant tips got me going again (it was still showing 80% charge when it came back on). I did need to hold down both buttons for at least 15-20 secs though

Anyone got any ideas why it happens?

same thing for me, have had ipad 2 for 3 months ...still charged with 60% , used all day and then put away for a few hours When I went to turn it on and it was completely dead, tried pushing sleep/awake buttons, double pressing home and still nothing. Was ready to take it to the apple store today but decided to charge it over night and when I woke up this morning uplugged it and opened the cover and it was fine! whew!

would love to know why this happnens and glad to see others having had the same issue!

My iPad 2 purchased just a couple of weeks ago died at almost full charge while I was listening to a meditation on the web. It would not charge, but pressing the HOME and POWER for about 10 seconds (while charging) worked. I did not work while not charging, but I may not have held it long enough.

I am grateful for the fix. I have to reset my iPod every so often, so I guess it's not a big deal--perhaps a software OS issue rather than hardware?

To ChitChat. Ok, I read all the responses to the problem. Yours and mine were the same. My iPad has not quit unexpectedly with battery at 85%, more or less. Mine has died like you said, when it has run down completely. When I plug it in it beeps once an hour tries to boot and then goes back to sleep and will not charge.

So, I took it to the apple store. The tech hooked up his notebook to my iPad. It reported a good battery. He said that my standby status look peculilar. I do not know what that means...apparently some up time versus not being used time that is accumulated in a status register somewhere.

I got a NEW iPad, version1, to solve the problem. Came from the back of the store, out of a brown box and that was the end of it. That was yesterday. I will see how it goes...but I think there is a hardware revision that is not disclosed to account for the non-charging device.

I confiscated my daughter's iPad for a couple of weeks (so she could concentrate on her studies) and as a result the battery died. I tried to recharge it but, left overnight, it still showed the empty battery sign and wouldn't fire up. Fortunately I found this page - and I persevered. It took about 20 attempts to restart pressing both the home and shutdown buttons and eventually the Apple logo appeared. It now seems to be charging normally. So, thanks to whoever discovered this trick - and to those who don't believe it works … keep trying!

my ipad also just died with no warning last week. The screen froze and would not respond to anything. I've tried the 2 buttons and it did bring up the apple logo but then it went away in 5 sec. No reboot, no nothing! Just a dead ipad! I did the same thing 20 times and the result were all the same. Finally, I've managed to conect to itune and then did the 2 buttons for 15 sec. itune recognize the ipad and then I went through the complete recovery procedure to bring my ipad back (about 2 hours). Now I have a very interesting problem! whenever i go to settings -> general -> usage, the ipad will reboot itself. Anybody have any clue of how to deal with this problem? Will there be other apps that will trigger the reboot? I'm on ios 6! Thanks for your help!

Yes, the iPad completely dying is the REAL issue here. For those who are posting that they are able to turn their iPads back on after going into recovery mode, you clearly donʻt understand the larger issue. The iPad actually can die even after attempting recovery mode and trying to restore your system. Iʻve been reading on other forums as well where people are getting various error messages that prevent the iPad from ever coming back to life. Since I tried everything I possibly can troubleshooting wise, short of taking the **** thing apart, I took it to Apple and even they told me it was a lost cause. They said either replace it or buy a new one. My faith in Apple products has never been shaken until today when I found out I can spend over $400 on a device that lasted me only a year and 7 months and not even the company that manufactured it can do anything about it. I took very good care of my iPad and everything about it is still near to brand new condition. Unfortunately when you have software/firmware issues, a dead iPad is just that. No coming back to life after that.

My two week old iPad4 had been charging okay both via USB and mains charger. However, I have been having problems with the wi-fi synch which I have been attempting to try and resolve. This involved many resets, rebuilds and reboots of both this iPad4 and my original iPad 1. Having finally decided to bin wi-fi synch until the release of iTunes 11, I decided to rebuild the new iPad from scratch so at least I could use it - only I found that it would NO LONGER CHARGE!!

After some grunt work, I resolved the problem by connecting the iPad to the mains charger and giving it the aforementioned "two-finger salute", but I kept holding the buttons until the apple logo disappeared again. I then unplugged, then replugged in the connector. Voila! The iPad switched itself on and started charging as normal. Obviously, I don't know if this will work for anyone else but I thought I'd throw it into the mix.
