Error while reading from device

When I try to manually add music to my new iPod touch, a few songs will be synced, then when I try to add more I get an error reading "The iPod <insert name here> cannot be synced. An error occurred while reading from the device."
I've updated my iTunes to the latest version, and I've tried restoring the iPod. These are my songs I have imported myself, so none of them are from the iTunes store. What else can I do or what am I doing wrong?
