'Missing Plug-in' instead of images in Mail 10.6.4

10.6.4 is still Snow Leopard - 10.6 - so you are in the right forum. There are no separate forums for updates of the OS.

I have exactly the same problem. No images, just a message reading Missing Plug-in in place of every graphic (including my business card signature).

I have exactly the same thing going on - however I do not consider it "resolved". The Mail program has been behaving in a very cranky fashion of late, especially with the mobile me synch, and with image attachments. Also with saving a copy of "sent" messages to the "drafs" folder and when you delete them they keep coming back, over and over again. This has happened before and I am hoping that Apple will do something to sort out this repetitive bug situation with the Mail program. Otherwise I'll be forced to use another email application because I've just about had enough. Apple kit is not cheap, I expect it to work or if there are bugs that they will at least get resolved - this dysfuntional Mail business has been going on for well over a year now.

I think I have a solution thanks to Donna9802 on another post (Thanks Donna):

Go to your applications folder and open the utilities folder.
Open Java Preferences and click on the 2 Restore Defaults buttons.

If for some reason, your java preferences mysteriously disappears from your dock, reinstall Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2 at http://support.apple.com/downloads/

Then go back and open Java Preferences and restore defaults.

This didn't work for me. I'm having the same problem trying to use a .jpg file in my signature. I still get the "missing plug-in" message. Any other thoughts?

There was a Mac OS X update today, to 10.6.3 - I notice this upgraded the Mail data base, so with any luck --- the Mail app performance might have been improved - watch this space 😉

Did you mean 10.6.4? 10.6.3 has been out since March.

Oops! Yes, I meant 10.6.4 - so far, Mail does seem to be working more smoothly as does the OS X but it's early days 🙂

I also get this issue... I tried the java thing, to no avail. I'm having to open the images i want to use as attachments on my iphone, save them to my camera roll folder, then sync my iphone with my mac using iphoto to get the image on my laptop.

I really don't get what the missing plugin thing is all about, quick look works, I just can't view the images or save them.

Thank you... this worked immediately. You saved me a lot of aggravation as I would never have thought Java preferences would effect the display of jpeg images in Apple Mail!

I tried the 'Old Standby Answer' to Update anomalies of the past: Download/Install the Combo Update. IT WORKED!

Resetting Java thingymajig worked. Weird, but glad it worked for me. Make sure you quit and restart Mail. BTW I was only getting this issue for my screenshot .png I was trying to send.

That worked for me too.

I've had the same problem. Since 10.6.1. It happens with PDFs & JPGs in my case. Rebooting mail normally solves it in the short run, or do the reset Java thing if that doesn't work. What upsets me is that I submitted a bug report for this a week after Snow Leopard was released and it's STILL not fixed.
