Hi,

Just recently the videos have stopped playing on my iPod. They still load on the iPod, and work in iTunes, but do not play on the iPod. I have it programmed to ask for "TV on or TV off" so that isn't the issue.

When I click to watch a video, the screen goes black and the white play symbol, volume controls and battery sign appear, but the screen remains black.

I have deleted and re-added the videos to iTunes and have reformatted the iPod, neither of which helped.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Some of the newer videos are in HD format and won't play on a fifth gen. Is it possible that these are HD videos? If so, you could try control-clicking the video in iTunes and see if you have the option to convert it to a format for the iPod.

I'm facing this same issue. purchased videos worked fine up until a few weeks back. now just a black screen on playback. Not set to tv out. Videos aren't HD. Sure would be nice to have this fixed.

Hello, I am having the exact same problem. I have also tried resetting my ipod, but with no luck. I have been on the support website so often i know it by heart. I am not even sure what our options are. Is our ipods junk now for video?

I just started having the same problem, music is fine video freezes. Support page is no help, I have tried resetting and restoring to factory settings and still having videos not playing. Has anyone had any luck with fixing? Or is this now a dead iPod?

Have the same problem as all of you. I'm not a big conspiracy theory person but this is just too quirky to be a coincidence!

It's as if you 'x' number of plays and then the iPod pulls the plug software like. Reason being so you'll either run out and get it fixed OR buy a new one. I'm trying not to think like this.

I'm having the same problem too! It started a couple of weeks ago that movies and video don't play, and hangs my ipod. So, I went to the Apple Store Genius Bar today. Very nice service rep helped me. However, I'm not too happy with the result. He told me more than likely it was the graphics hardware that's causing the problem. He gave me 3 options:

    1) They could replace the defective hardware for $129 (might as well buy a new one!)
    2) Trade it in and get 10% off a new device,
3)Try iresq.com to see if they could fix it for cheaper (little surprised he recommended a 3rd party site).

Well there you go, not really any good options there as far as I'm concerned. I may contact iresq.com just to see if they can give me a quote.

It has been the last few weeks as well for me. The song plays but just the album picture is there. I play the video in Itunes and it is there so what is going on? The Ipod is like 4 years old and still works except for recently the videos. Yeah I would love an Ipod touch but I don't have $300 lying around. Anybody got an answer to this problem? Did the company just say in the year 2010 all videos will stop playing on the 5th generation so they need new ones or what?

I'm having the exact same issue. This is probably a stupid question, but is there a way to revert to an older version?

Count me in as another user having this problem. If I have TV off, black screen and white controls on screen until it freezes in about 20 seconds. If TV on, I get the title screen on the ipod, and nothing on the output screen until it freezes in about 20 seconds. Happens on every movie I have downloaded into itunes.

Same exact issue, my Ipod had several videos on it and I have not even synced it with Itunes in many months. So I know that all the videos were working fine having watched them over the last year.

Suddenly my Ipod when asked to play a video gets the white play Icon, and black screen. If I try and navigate out it locks and the unit must be hard reset. AFTER this issue began I:

    1) Hard reset the Ipod.
    2) Did a restore using Itunes.
    3) Verified TV out was off, And tried with ask.
    4) Downloaded a verified version of the Firmware and using the shift key and clicking on restore browsed to the firmware and allowed it to install.

None of these steps have made any difference. I know of several people online using 3rd party software have reverted their Ipods back to older versions of the firmware but this makes no difference. Same issue we are having persists.

Are their any apple support responses for this issue? Any help would be appreciated. I use my Ipod for language studies and have many videos of instructions I watch during my commute.

Well no response from Apple.Guess my Ipod is just an expensive MP3 player now...
Bought a Zune HD. Issue resolved. I knew it was a mistake to buy an apple product. Good look everyone else.
