I'm on 2.4 GHz IC2D iMac. I just updated to 10.6.4 this morning.
I usually listen to iTunes in the background as I write emails or use Safari.
I keep iTunes in the "mini-player" mode. Since updating to 10.6.4, every
time I hit the "+" button to maximize iTunes from mini-player mode, the finder freezes.
The music still plays, the mouse cursor still moves but everything else
(and I mean everything) is completely frozen.
I have to use the power-button to turn off and reboot.

Installed 10.6.4 and iTunes 9.2. Everything seems to work until iTunes starts downloading podcasts then the beach ball appears, Finder is dead, dock freezes and I have to do a hard reboot...UGH!!!!
This has happened 3 times in span of 15 minutes. Come on Apple!
I have this problem as well. Istalled 10.6.4 and itunes 9.2 and now I can not get into my iMAC. I was synning my iphone and itunes froze up. A restart has not worked. At the login screen nothing happens. How can I get into my system. THe mouse works, but I can't select a user to login. Frustrating. It worked before I installed itunes 9.2. For some reason my MACBOOK that's 2 years old works fine.
iTunes 9.2 doesn't solve it for me. System ALMOST totally unresponsive.
It took over 20 minutes for the 3 finger salute to pop up.
Killing iTunes did not immediately fix the problem, but it slowly improved.
Load average was over 1, but not by much.

Had intermittent freezes with 10.6.3 like a number of other users. 10.6.4 had 100% freezes when opening iTunes. Think the issue is problem with accelerated graphics drivers exposed by displaying cover flow. See the link below, it resolved all my system freezing problems.
sadly, I updated to itunes 9.2 prior to 10.6.4 and I still get it killing my imac.
everything else except music is working.
So "tunes" are the only thing that doesn't work in my itunes 😉
An old problem, and somewhat off topic, but one can easily hang the Finder by option-clicking a closed disclosure triangle of a whole volume, or a large folder such as / or ~/Music.
It needs to do something more reasonable in this case.
Boot into *Safe Mode* by restarting the iMAc when holding down the
Shift key until you get the spinning gear wheel. Wait till the Mac has restarted, then restart again normally (i.e. no shift key this time).
Open *Disk Utility*; use the *Verify Dis*k option. If all ok, use the '*Repair Permissions*' option on the Root Directory (top leftmost HDD icon).
