Maps stuck in walking mode

Using iphone 3g with 3.1.3 and the map that comes with the iphone (i think it is google maps). This thing is in walking mode and not driving mode. So when i type in my dest and then tap route, it gives me directions as if i was walking and not driving. How do you get the map app back into driving mode?
