RAW edits stay as RAW

Quote from iPhoto '08 Help re edits to a RAW file in iPhoto '08:

"When you click Done, your editing changes are applied to the RAW image data and stored as a JPEG file (the original RAW file remains unchanged). . . . iPhoto simplifies the RAW workflow by combining RAW editing and JPEG conversion into one step. . . ."

So where are these jpg files stored? I edit in iPhoto, click Done and the RAW preview shows the changes with info showing it as RAW. No new jpgs to be found in iPhoto or elsewhere.

I can export to jpg or other file types and reimport, or drag to desktop resulting in tif and reimport. But what is that Help note supposed to mean?

Thx

in the modified folder within the iPhoto library - but stay out of the iPhoto Library - there are no user serviceable parts in it and any change you make can cause data loss

OK, as always, your knowledge is deep and impressive. And many thanks for naming the location, as asked - although I do not see a Modified folder in the iPhoto Library, or in the iPhoto folders in User or System libraries or Ap Support folders - so assume it's one of those hidden folders.

And this is not your fault, but these jpg files do not "simplify the RAW workflow". I still need to convert the RAW by taking it out of iPhoto in order to get my edits in other formats.

The conversion is an export or drag to location outside of iPhoto, which does not seem like "combining RAW editing and JPEG conversion into one step."

Maybe the Help writers got caught up in the hype before the software was finalized.

Or am I missing something?
Any comment welcome.

To see the content of the iPhoto library right click on the iPhoto library and select show package contents - you will see all of the contents of the iPhoto library including the originals folder, the data folder that contains the thumbnails and the modified folder that contains the edited versions

And one more time - DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES or any sort to anything in the iPhoto library

I still need to convert the RAW by taking it out of iPhoto in order to get my edits in other formats.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish? You can always export (or drag) photos but usually you simply do not need to do that

First of all, many thanks for your replies LarryHN.

I am trying to do 2 things with this thread:

1. I hope to better understand the meaning/intent of the quoted lines from iPhoto '08 Help. What's the point of the ap creating a jpg and saving it to a place where I should not access it or use it? Perhaps iPhoto uses those jpgs for previews or something, but how does that improve my conversion workflow as announced? How does that make RAW to jpg conversion a one step process?

2. Click Done and a jpg appears, ready for my use, as implied in the quoted Help statements.

So this is more a complaint/wish about Help and a request for others with more knowledge to either set me straight, or agree that the Help statements are mysterious. I know how to import the RAWs from camera, edit, export or otherwise convert, but the process (mine, at least) does not seem to match statements in Help.

It is, as all iphoto photos are, easily accessed by any application that follows Apple protocols - iPhoto is fully integrated with all Apple applications and most others so when you access photo you always get the current edited version

It is as described above

So this is more a complaint/wish about Help

Then why are you posting it in a user to user forum that Apple does not monitor or act on? If you have a complaint/wish list you should send it to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback

I disagree on 1 and 2, but agree on 3, so will mark as answered with hat off to you.

1. The jpg is not easily accessed, as it is buried in a folder which is not intended for user access - you even suggested, twice, not to mess with that folder.

2. Clicking Done does not produce a jpg in the iPhoto window, nor any notice that a jpg file was created or where it might be -like the common Save As protocol for example. So the required workflow would be to first understand that the the jpg was created, navigate into the Library>Modified folder, find the correct jpg (there might be many with similar names), and copy back into iPhoto or Preview or other ap. It's probably fewer steps to just export, which is about same workflow as other image aps.

3. I would not have posted if I had not read the Help topic on RAW. I asked here and received your generous comment. Many thanks. I will post it in the Apple feedback, and mark this closed and helpful.

You are simply accessing it incorrectly

click here for a discussion on the many correct and safe ways to access your iPhoto library photos.

the contents of the iPhoto library are easily accessed - there are never accessed by going into the iPhoto library and finding the folder for the photo

Once again you are simply accessing yoru photos incorrectly - see above for a discussion on correctly accessing them
