Question

iTunes will verify the restore with Apple ????????????

Apple customers have been restoring data from Superduper, Carbon Copy Cloner, Backup.app, Retrospect for many years with checking in without verifying anything with Apple.

How along comes the iPhone and it needs to call home to "verify".

Anybody out there know what the intent was on Apple's part for this ? I have NO IDEA why when I went to go restore my iPhone 3Gs this dialogue should need to occur. Why was it even written ? My iPhone doesnt need an OS update at all. I merely wish to restore MY OWN DATA to MY OWN PHONE.

Further, why does the whole iPhone need to be erased ? Does this include erasing and reinstalling the OS ? I can see no reason why that would be necessary just to restore user data

Restore in iTunes restores the operating system, and Apple requires that the OS be at the latest revision. You shouldn't need to do a restore to get your own data, unless the iPhone has crashed. in which case the OS is corrupt and needs to be reinstalled.

but I do. Thanks LF. But do you know why it should be necessary for me to have to DL another 3.1.3 update to my iPhone when it already has this ?

Also do you know why Apple sfw programmers wrote that bit into a dialogue in the first place ?

I can't speak for Apple programmers. If you still have the 3.1.3 ipsw file on your computer it will reuse it and not download it again, but it will still go back to Apple's server to verify the copy that you have, presumably to verify that it has not been hacked.

ok that was helpful. I looked in:

~/Library/iTunes/

and found no ipsw file. That must hav been the reason, just like OSX package receipts if these arent left alone the OS will think they require downloading again.

Ok one mystery solved.
