Just updated iTunes this morning, and now my iPod won't sync. It verifies the iPod and as soon as it starts to sync, iTunes completely freezes, and a few seconds later my iPod no longer says syncing on the screen. I have to force quit iTunes. I've tried doing automatic syncing, manual syncing, restarting my computer, resetting my iPod, nothing seems to work. What should I do?
This happens now and again that Apple releases an update that breaks something. They'll fix it soon. In the meantime, if you have a backup, just replace it and the library and carry on for now until a new version comes out. If you don't, now's a good time to think about making one.
This won't really help at all, but I also found it slightly interesting that when i synced my iPod 5th Gen (Video), that there was a significant lag or pause when syncing. This normally doesn't happen. Now, it was my FIRST sync since 10.6.4 and 9.2, so maybe it is just that and I haven't tried a second sync yet...however, after 15 seconds or so it synced no problem.
I just plugged my iPod in after the update this morning and my mouse started beach balling. I checked the activity monitor and it said iTunes was not responding so I force quit, disconnected and reopened iTunes.
When I connected my iPod for a second time exactly the same thing happened, and it said it wasn't responding on the Activity Monitor, but I left it plugged in and started to search to see if anyone else had this problem after the 9.2 and 10.6.4 update, however as I opened this thread I got a notification sound and my iPod has synced perfectly.
It took around 5 mins at the most, so if you haven't already, try leaving it a while and seeing if that sorts it. Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
Hey, that worked! It took about 5 minutes for me, but then it started syncing just fine and unfroze. Let's hope that they fix that one soon. Thanks for the idea.
there was an issue with a driver not being signed for me, and i had to follow the directions listed here to get it to work

just use the option to select a driver from a list when you get to that point.

I posted this elsewhere, glad Tom started a thread.
Having same problem with iTunes 9.2 on Leopard. When I installed yesterday, it took a long time to update the library. After that it works fine. However, when I plug my iPod Classic in, it first wants to "verify" the device, and once it does that and I try to sync, iTunes freezes.
I have repaired permissions, downloaded a fresh copy of iTunes today, still the same problem and I don't see any updates for this problem yet. Don't have an iPhone so don't know if that device would have the same problem.
I hope that is a fix soon. I don't want to wipe and restore my iPod as I don't think that's the problem and with 160GB, it's going to take all day to re-upload the files, assuming it even would work.
I am not getting an error in iTunes, it just freezes while syncing and I have to force quit. I have turned off automatic syncing too, with the same results.
I will try again now that people are saying that we have to wait five minutes and post back if that works.
Ahh, I forgot that TimeMachine backs up applications too, so just recovered the older version from there and I am back to the pre-update. Thanks Simon for the quick reminder.
Same problem here with iPod Classic 6th gen 160Gb. Tried connecting twice and it wouldn't synch and noticed the ipod no longer had any music or anything on it! Had to restore and am currently synching about 110Gb of music! Really hoping that when I connect my iPhone shortly for the first time since updating iTunes that it isn't affected.
I see in other forums that many people are having trouble with the iPhone and Touch as well. I would restore the old iTunes if you can, restore the old library that iTunes makes for you when they update, and then wait for them to fix this. I have a full 160GB too and with USB, it would take all day to reload it. I can wait for a fix. Nothing in the new iTunes benefits me anyway that I can see yet.
My classic seems to have synched but keeps coming up with messages that it can't synch because a file is in use and it won't eject either for a similar reason!
