Alignment of digit numbers in a List

Help with number Lists

How does one align, in Pages, a list of sentences in a vertical column so that the period after the numbers are lined up. Single digit numbers align naturally but two digits numbers don't. For example:

1. In the first place etc.
2. In the second place etc
10. In the third place etc
11. In the fourth place etc

Any help would be appreciated

Yes Peter, that is what I want. I want the decimals to align like this in a list. It looks much neater that way when listing sentences. Note Yvan, how the decimals are aligned to the right

1. The first sentence
2. The second sentence
10. The third sentence

How can this be done in Pages? If it can not be done then the iWork programmers need to implement this in the next edition of iWork so that it can be done in a single click.

I found more information by googling for _alignment of numbered lists_ which should explain what I am talking about. I hope Pages in future editions implements something simple for alignment of decimal places in numbered lists.

I have done just that Peter!!! I hope that Apple implements improvements in numbered lists and other discrepancies in footnoting, mail merge, etc. If not, I will wait patiently until Microsoft Office 2010 is released in November. I really dislike using Word which is why I moved to iWork and Pages but if I need something that is not in Pages, I will be forced to move to Microsoft Office-which I throughly dread.

I believe that Apple will have to make a decision about whether they will implement what customers want. It's their call!!

I look at your two examples.
They aren 't using list format but simply tabs.

You may achieve that with Pages :

User uploaded file

I inserted a tab char before the numbers,
a tab between a number and the text on the right.
I define a 'numerical tab stop ' and a standard tab stop
and bingo, I got the wanted result.

I was surprised because I thought that it will not behave correctly with numbers + a period because here in France this kind of entry isn't a number.
It works.
The complete string 123. is exactly on the left of the decimal tab stop.
If I put a decimal comma after the digits,
the digits are on the left of the tab stop, the comma is on its right.
I don't know what you will get on an English system.

The examples pointed by the OP where not using list styles so, I applied the same scheme.
I thought that it was clear because there is no tab between the number and the text when we apply 'list style'.
The described tab stops aren't deeply buried on the screenshot 😉
So to be more precise :
no list style,
just tab_stops correctly defined.

When a tool doesn't behave as we want, it's often efficient to use an other one.

Of course, this doesn't means that it's useless to post a feed back to Apple but it's a clean way to get the wanted result.
From my point of view, it's easier than inserting an 'extraneous margin' for the first nine items because this scheme requires that we reduce the space between the number and the text.

And to be honest (one more time) I think that we will not see a change on this specific point of the lists behaviour.

The mis-alignment of numeric lists is a disgrace in a modern word processor. Apple really needs to add an option for customizing the alignment of numbers in a numbered list.

The problem is aggravated by the fact that when manually creating a numbered list they are automatically recognized and changed to the numbered list style. You can only create one manually if you first go to preferences and turn off the automatic detection of number lists.

Apple please fix this in the next release of Pages. In my opinion Pages numbered lists are broken and useless until this is corrected.
