Use System Preferences, International, Inputs and check 'Show input menu in menu bar'.
That will add a national 'flag' icon to your menu bar above the screen for the selected language.
Next in System Preferences, International, Inputs, use a checkmark to select the other languages you need (US or British, German).
Then in System Preferences, International, Language, drag the languages into preferred order. You would probably select German (Deutsch) as your first choice.
The 'flag' of the active keyboard language appears in the menu bar.
To change the keyboard/language, click on the flag in the menu bar, and the other flags will be displayed. Click on the one you need to select that language/keyboard.
Turning on the Keyboard Viewer display will show you the active keyboard to be sure you are entering the right characters.
So, when you need to type in a password that won't accept the German characters, select US (or British) then switch back to German once you're successfully connected.
