Q: Snow Leopard on Mac Mini Server

Hi All - I have a new 2010 Mac Mini Server and would like to install Snow Leopard (non server version) on it. When I boot from the retail SL DVD on an external USB drive, it boots ok, then I get the error screen and have to hold down the power button to restart.

does anyone have any idea how I can achieve this?

Nev.

Yeah, it was a rather unfortunate request... Feeling rather embarrassed now... But seems the post is set in stone for some reason.

Well, at least thanks to your help seems I'll be able to get the server up and running after all, was starting to give up hope...

It's possible that your OSX SERVER retail serial # will work with the Mini Server installation.

    I sincerely hope so...

If I find out that it actually doesn't I'll have to either try the method people in this thread have been using to install the client OS in the server (in my case get the missing modules from the client disk) install the server OS in target disk mode etc. etc. or wait for Apple to release a generic OS X Server that supports this model and purchase another license.

All in all what looked like a good idea is turning out to be not so great after all...

And I have no one but myself to blame. The Mac Mini Server comes with it's own install disks so there's no real reason for Apple to release support for this model on generic disks...

    Ah well, such is life...

I'm having trouble understanding what you wanted to accomplish by purchasing a $700 Mini and a $500 OSX Server license (for a total of $1200) when you could have both in one neat package for $1000.

If it's not too late to return the Mini, you want to do so.

Oh, I'm nowhere near those figures...

I repaired a 2nd hand unit that had suffered liquid ingress for a total cost of about $400 and got a server license from eBay for about $300. And the price of the Mini Server here is about $1400. I'm in the UK, the wrong side of the Atlantic for the prices you quote :P

Just a quick thanks. Retail server serial no. validated with the Mac Mini specific server install DVD (phew!).

Time to get it up and running

I joined just for this topic. I want to install either Windows XP or both SL 10.6 and Windows XP on the 2nd HD of my new 2010 Mini Server.

I am already running BootCamp and Parallels on the 2009 Client. BootCamp is excellent, Parallels has some shortcomings. I also have VMWare on the new Server from where I am writing using Firefox, but it has many limitations for even minor games. That is why I want to put BootCamp on the 2nd HD of the Server.

I have the reinstall disks for both Minis as well as SL 10.6 Retail and Win XP Retail. I also have the 10.6 update downloaded if I need it.

After unsuccessfully attempting to get the 2009 Reinstall Disk or 10.6 Retail Disk to even be allowed to boot on the Server, I "borrowed" BootCamp Assistant from the Client and put it on the Server. It runs fine and comes up into the Windows XP installer after rebooting. But when it comes to choosing where to install XP I then have two choices. It shows both a single partition MBR 500gig and a two partition MBR 500gig with a 200mb 1st partiton and the rest another partition.

As there are only two HD in the server I fail to understand this two MBR drives situation. So at this point I F3 and exit Windows XP install. That puts me back to square one except I now get an error, which is easily closed, upon the Server Desktop opening that says the disk I have inserted is not recognized. At that point there is no disk in the Samsung USB External DVD I am using on the Server so why this message?

Now, to cut to the chase, any ideas on this?

Have I been censored for some reason? Three posts of a discussion after my initial post have disappeared.

The Hosts remove posts that try to offer pirated software. The person who responded to you was trying to lead you to illegal copies of the Early 2010 Mac mini Client Restore discs that are posted on the web.

This is an example to you that such things are not allowed here. Legal Apple software is not usually available from strange sources as torrents! The AD Hosts remove posts at first, but if the person persists at it they close down that person's account permanently.

I found his posts of little use anyway as they did not address my questions. But I was in no way doing anything to violate any rules.

Thanks for your response but even it seems quite pointed and somewhat rude to a newcomer.

I have participated on many forums and never treated this abruptly. I had information in the last post that I resent having removed when a simple editing by admin would have taken care of their objections. All of what I described was using legal Apple and other software on two Mac Minis I paid full retail for.

Sorry that you are misunderstanding me. English is not my first language.

I was explaining that they were removing the other guy's posts. That unfortunately got one/some of yours also deleted as part of his bad posting.

The Hosts are few in number and do not always have time to edit, and sometimes they have to resort to just deleting the offending thread.

I think that all of the fuss happening with the iPhone forums are keeping them quite busy. There are many trolls creating new accounts over there just to rant about Apple and the new iPhone 4.

    Yeah, he's worthless.

    Oh, wait that's me.

Sorry my advice is worthless for you.

    It's worked well for others.

Your English is quite good and just seemed unnecessarily blunt. Thank's for your attempt to explain the situation but to me it does not excuse deleting legitimate posts.

I am afraid that their actions will now have scared off anyone who might have tried to answer my questions. I will move myself to a forum elsewhere.

Thanks again and hopefully I am wrong about them driving off those who might have been able to help me.

Good grief, all I did was ask a couple of legitimate questions.
