Jun 24, 2010 12:13 PM in response to jnjr16by Steep&Deep,Just got back from the apple store again had to go pick up my phone it was crazy. I purchased a copy of the latest 10.6.3 with the green sticker. The told me I could return it if it did not work. I will try to install on saturday and will post how it went after word. I have a superdrive in an external enclosure that I removed from my MacBook Pro. I will test the DVD play back with that. Wish Me Luck on the install. -

Just got back from the Apple store with no luck getting the Mac mini restore disks. They told me the only way they would provide them to me would be if I could show proof of purchase of a mac mini, proof of purchase of a mac mini server would not work. The apple genius also insured me that I could use the SL 10.6.3 retail disk to install SL client on my mac mini server without any issues, even though we all know you can't. Now I am thinking of buying a mac mini and making disk images of the install disks and then returning it. Anyone have issues returning a computer to apple?
The geniuses are right. I went and bought another retail disk. This time one specifically labeled with a grebe sticker as 10.6.3 and it installed just fine. I then did system updates and applied the mid 2010 Mac mini update from the apple site. All could not be better.
So to sum up. I have the new just released Mac mini server model with snow leopard server removed and snow leopard regular installed fresh from a 10.6.3 disc.
Hope this helps to know.
Thats interesting since my 10.6.3 dvd DOES NOT INSTALL. How did you install it. Just normal pop it in and start up the installer? I am interested why your dvd would install and mine gives me an error, and will not even start the installer. -

Last night I got a hold of the disks that come with a New Mac Mini Mid 2010 non-server version and used those disks to install on my Server version.
Everything working, including EtherNet, DVD Player and SD slot. I didn't want to take a chance that a retail version of 10.6.3 has everything on it since this Mac Mini is newer then when retail 10.6.3 came out.
So far, everything fine and updated to 10.6.4.
Hey tzmmtz,
If I may ask how did you get your hands on a mini restore disk. The Apple store i went to did not have one, and they checked their floor models for it. Did you know someone who bought a mac mini, or acquire it another way?

Jun 24, 2010 12:53 PM in response to Hotman2009by Dah•veed,Apple Care helps people get Restore Disks for various Mac models all the time. They usually are about US$20 for S&H. Have you tried calling them? -

Yes I understand that but they will not provide me with a MacMini (Non-server) disk because they want your Serial Number to give you the cd. I wish i could get them to send me one because it would be much easier. But since I have the Server edition they will not provide me with one. I could try again maybe i will get someone else who will send me one.

Well mine has the 10.6.3 Green Sticker on it. I don't remember any where on it saying new. (Not home but possibly it did) You saying there is another newer version of the 10.6.3 dvd being sold at the apple store? If so they really were easy and nice since they just exchaged my disk last time. Would just have to go in and have them do it again. -
Jun 25, 2010 10:19 PM in response to JOEJOEMOJOby max.heller,I was able to install Snow Leopard on the Mini Server using the retail 10.6 disk,
While booted into SL Server:
1) Format the second drive with Disk Utility with GUID partition table and Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2) Put in the original Snow Leopard DVD
3) Type the following into Terminal (give your password when prompted):
sudo /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/CDIS/Mac\ OS\ X\ Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/Mac\ OS\ X\ Installer /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ DVD/System/Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg
4. The Terminal will show a few errors, but it should launch the installer for SL as if it was running from the DVD
5. Install Snow Leopard on the second drive
6. Don't boot to the new install yet. Download 10.6.4 Combo Updater and install it to the second drive: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048
7. Rename the "Server HD" to "osxServerDisk" (makes step 9 easier)
8. Boot from second drive and do the initial setup
9. While booted into Snow Leopard, open up terminal and type in the following, in sequence (give your password when prompted):
sudo cp -rpv /Volumes/osxServerDisk/System/Library/Extensions/AppleSDXC.kext /System/Library/Extensions
sudo cp -rpv /Volumes/osxServerDisk/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Conten ts/PlugIns/AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns
sudo cp -rpv /Volumes/osxServerDisk/System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Conten ts/PlugIns/nvenet.kext /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/nvenet.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleBCM570 1Ethernet.kext
sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleSDXC.kext
Should work! -

Did you try the dvd player trying to play a dvd after install? Did it work? -
Jun 25, 2010 11:33 PM in response to Hotman2009by max.heller,Just tried the DVD player application.
Sorry to say it does not work (No dvd drive found etc..)
I don't plan on ever using the drive to do anything besides install software, so that is good enough for me for now. -
Jun 25, 2010 11:55 PM in response to Hotman2009by Dah•veed,Did you really need to repeat/quote all of that just to ask that tiny question? -
Jun 26, 2010 2:42 PM in response to Hotman2009by Macme,FYI: I had a 10.6.3 with a green sticker that said 'new' and it did not install.
