10.6.4 USB Pro Speakers (G4 Cube) don't work on Macbook Pro

I updated to 10.6.4 and my USB Pro Speakers (G4 Cube) don't work but they worked with 10.6.3. These speakers match this Macbook Pro beautifully and I'd like to get them working again.

System Preferences shows USB as an Output Source in Sound Preferences and I can turn the volume up and down but nothing comes out.

I created a new account, same issue. I even deleted com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist hoping that would fix it and nothing.

They still work as verified by my roommates machine that's running 10.6.3 :/

help?

Hello MichelPM!

I understand what you mean, there's a bit of a confusion with these types of speakers.

Basically Apple had 2 types of Pro Speakers, one was for the iMac G4 & the other ones were for the G4 Cube (I've attached pictures to show the difference).

The Apple G4 Cube came with the USB Pro Speakers. They are extremely hard to find because they weren't sold separately, however if you ever see a pair definitely get them! An easy way to tell them apart from the iMac G4 speakers is that they have a black circle around the chrome speaker, and are linked to a small black Apple box that outputs to USB.

Here's the tutorial on how to connect the G4 Cube Speakers easily: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_t4vF1LEDw

The iMac G4 speakers use a strange round connector that will only work with an iMac G4 or Powermac G4. However, you can buy an adaptor, but it isn't cheap (link below).

Hopefully this helps!

Eureka!

extracted & installed file as per above using pacifist, no joy

then that kext utility think finished it off

sound cut out at low volumes - perhaps the USB port on the Air doesn't provide the necessary power, i read somewhere, which *thinks* is probably apple's reason for discontinuing support

now I have to do it all again on the mac pro

thanks all

Thanks so much for posting the link! Now my little balls... er, *speakers* are more than just paperweights.

While looking for Kext Utility I discovered an even easier way to do this now: an app called Kext Wizard. I opened it up, browsed for the file linked in the post above, let it do some wizard stuff, rebooted and TA-DA! My balls aren't paperweights anymore.

(ahem)

Thanks again!

Hey guys.

I have just found this thread in my search for the same answer as you were searching for.

I'm kind of confused, and I don't really understand what to do. Can some of you please make a little note on how to get the speakers to work?

btw, the Kext Wizard no longer seems to be download-able in the app-store.

Kind regards from Jacob, Denmark

Thanks for your clever work with this miu. I now have my old Cube speakers running with my mid-2011 iMac under 10.8.2.

That being said, I'm noticing two things:

1. Volume ouput is low, compared to the built-in speakers, even at the highest volume.

2. Changing the volume on the Mac can sometimes make the speakers go crazy, where the track keeps playing but with stutters.

Is there any ways around the issues that you've found, particularly to increase output?

Cheers!

I am sorry to barge in ,I am doing research on the Apple Pro Speakers and Sticks II and Cube Speakers I have all types 4 Lamp shade Computers with Apple Pro Speakers and 1 cube with the USB Speakers but not the iSub,

and 2 spare sets. three Lamp shades I got these computers I got dirt cheap after the earthquake ,the owners maybe feel at risk because they may fall off. the Cube speakers surround rubber rotted due to Sendai very high summer Humidity, the black box amp is ok 2 pairs were 10 USD and never been used I cut off the Plug to see what was inside, there is a chip inside the Y round part that receives the signal from the software drivers you have been discussing I guess ; the Cube speaker external Amp is more complicated.

My idea is to use USB cube speakers with ApplePro and Sticks all together for dual use and keep them for their Computers

I am trying to make a set to go with the Sticks with out cutting thr 2.5 pin the speakers are 4 Ohms so I have to connect them in series that means finding the proper 2.5 sockets and connecting them on s board and by passing the Chip that is used as a gateway.

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread.

In order for us to give your problem our undivided attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X.
