Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) and frozen "Connect to iTunes" screen

I have had my iPod Touch for about one year and have synced with my PC (XP) without incident during that time. Yesterday something happened while connecting with iTunes and I have not been able to find the solution on this board or others. Maybe the charge remaining in the iPod was insufficient. The iPod screen is frozen with the "Connect to iTunes" icon. I can turn it off (black screen) but as soon as it is attached to the PC or docked, the same icon reappears. I cannot make the red slider appear to shut it down.

On the PC side, as soon as I attach the iPod, it wants to install the driver for "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)". I have attempted to point it to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers find the driver, but what it wants is not there. I have completely uninstalled iTunes, Quicktime and related files; and reinstalled iTunes. I have tried every trick I can find in this forum and others to no avail. When the iPod is connected to the PC, the device manager shows Other Devices - Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) with a yellow question mark and exclamation point. This device shows twice. The Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and is working properly.

I am at the end of my rope. I hope somebody that can help me will read this. Thanks.

Welcome to the discussions,
did you follow this article about installing the needed USB drivers? http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Also make sure to charge your iPod before you connect.

Thank you for the response. I have uninstalled USB drivers; scanned for new hardware; etc. Always wants to install Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode) and can't find it. I have placed the iPod in a charging dock overnight; however, I can see only the "Connect to iTunes" icon and get no feedback as to whether it is actually charging. Seems to me the device needs a physical hard reset option.

Did you reset the ipod by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes up again?
Then try to connect in recovery mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
If this does not work, try another computer to restore. Don't forget to disable autosync on this one before you connect. After that try again to connect to your computer.
Did you check for available BIOS updates for your computer?

Yes, I have done what is suggested in that article. While I was messing around, suddenly iTunes recognized the iPod in recovery mode and wanted to restore. I do not know what I did in what order to make this happen but I was doing different things with the buttons and the USB connection. Anyway, I clicked on restore and the process went on for several minutes and stopped before completion. It identified a 1601 error. Based on this, I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled. All is the same as in the original post except the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not present. I cannot duplicate the action to get back to restore.

I will try to restore on another computer, if my wife will let me have hers for a while. Thanks again for your help.

Hi

I am experiencing the same problem as the person in the first thread as follows:

"The iPod screen is frozen with the "Connect to iTunes" icon.

The Apple Mobile Device USB Driver shows under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and is working properly."

I have tried everything I can think of and have been advised to do on the Apple Support pages but this makes no difference.

Please can someone offer a solution.

I had the EXACT same problem, and also had my iPod for around a year. When you connect the USB to the comp and iPod does it say something along the lines of it cannot install the driver device software?
I have tried EVERYTHING in the forums other than installing itunes on a different computer.
Did you literally just plug your iPod into another comp and it fixed the problem?
Thanks
