Optical Drive won't stay shut/accept a disc

All of a sudden. Burned a disc, was going through some photo CDs doing some image harvesting and then it started spitting out the disc(s) immediately. When I shut down, the tray still won't stay closed. Always something … nothing new has been installed software- wise, other than downloading the recent iTunes and Safari upgrades.

G5, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

Nope. It's at work, no kids, no body but me. I tried a new/blanks disc and it spit it out {I burned one this morning}. I tried discs I have used repeatedly for a long, long time and the same problem. There's been no trouble inserting or removing discs recently at all. In fact, I burned a whole bunch of discs yesterday lickety-split. With no problem. All of a sudden … I'm in the quagmire …
