Primary mouse button not working

When I plug in a mouse that has worked for me in the past, the left click doesn't do anything. I tried changing the primary mouse button to the right button, but then the left click works fine and right click does nothing instead. I tried using a friend's mouse that has always worked fine, but the same thing happens.

(My trackpad button seems to be permanently stuck, so for now I can only click using Mouse Keys.)

The source of the problem may well be the trackpad. If it is "permanently stuck", then you've got a hardware fault that needs to be fixed. And as it's constantly sending a signal to the processor, it's going to interfere with any mouse or trackpad operation.

Otherwise, did the mouse need a manufacturer's driver to operate? If so, it's probably a good idea to check for an update to it.
