No audio output over minidisplay port/hdmi since upgrading to 10.6.4

I use a Griffin "video display convertor" (as recommended by Apple's support article for ext displays) to output 1080p with audio over hdmi via mini displayport on my 27" iMac (core2Duo model). While I sometimes had to manually tell OSX to use the mdp output as the audio output instead of the speakers despite my chosen app being set to use mdp regardless, it worked fine.

However since upgrading from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4, I have lost the ability to change audio. In system preferences, only the internal speakers are given as an option. In other words, 10.6.4 seems to have broken my audio out by removing the choice. If this were another mac I could be forgiven for thinking audio out wasn't supported over mdp, but I know better then this.

No other system changes have been made that could account for this. I'm using the same cables and tv. I've reconnected everything, rebooted and also power cycled the tv, all to no effect

What is the current status of this problem?

Does Apple monitor these forums?

I have a similar situation: no option to select the TV under the sound setup.

My laptop is a brand new macbook pro.

My cable setup is slightly different. I have the mini-display port to DVI adapter (apple) attached to a DVI-HDMI cable (belkin)

I was not aware of the grffin produce and purchased my adapter and cable from the apple store with my laptop on the recommendation of the sales agent (via chat window) specifically because they said it would carry audio.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for the info Dah•veed.

I was able to confirm with Apple Care that the new Macbook's should carry audio via the display cable but that only very specific cables had been tested to work.

The two valid adapters from the apple store are:

* Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support - http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1824ZM/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY
* Griffin Video Display Converter - http://store.apple.com/us/product/TY600VC/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY

I am thinking of purchasing the Moshi - if and when I do I will update this thread with my results. If I have the same problem as Dandy_Sephy I will consult again with Apple Care.

Hey folks,

My family recently purchased our first Macbook and I wanted to see what the best solution would be to connect it to our HDTV via HDMI with sound.

I read this thread in its entirety:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2399642

As people have pointed out in that thread, you can get an adapter (which will carry sound) from Fry's. I was also able to find it on Amazon:
http://www.frys.com/product/5964764
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002UHJ1IS/

However, I did not want to use an adapter and decided to seek a male to male cable. I checked on monoprice and after asking their support staff, I confirmed that they did not have any such cables which would also carry sound. So I checked on eBay as well and actually found two sellers (hootoodeals and smartlaptopparts) offering cables that do carry sound. I was skeptical, but after the cable was delivered today I personally confirmed that the sound works perfectly fine. They're currently selling these cables for $11.99.

Here are two examples:

For anyone wondering, the operating system version I'm using is 10.6.4.

I hope that helps.

Final update - works for me!

I just wanted to give the final update.

I ordered the moxi dp -> hdmi adapter + a belkin hdmi cable

When I connect them to my Samsung TV I now get video AND audio via the cable.

I had to take the one additional step of going to System Preferences -> Sound and setting my output to my TV - this option showed up in addition to the internal speakers as soon as I plugged the cable and adapter in.

So for me it was definitely an issue of making sure I had the right cable. I am running OS X 10.6.4 and I updated with the combo update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048

I have an iMac (late 2009) model & I too cannot get audio out via the minidisplayport. I tried two different adapters (Moshi & Griffin). So I called Apple Support & opened a support case. I confirmed that it was a 10.6.4 error by booting an older clone on of my MPB that was 10.6.3 & the audio out via the displayport worked without a hitch.

So if you are having issues I highly suggesting contacting support so that they can get the ball rolling on a fix.
