Using a external Optical Drive

I know that it is possible to use a remote optical drive to install osx on a macbook air. I was wondering if the same would be possible for the Macbook Pro's. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro Core duo and would like to use an external optical drive to load the operating system. The internal drive is not working. Any help is appreciated!

Hi, I've been having similar problems to the original poster, but in my case I already have a USB external DVD drive, and have tried booting from an install DVD on it. You say it should boot from something like this, but I've been unable to get it to do so. Even when working properly on my desktop, and offering the contents of the DVD, it still doesn't list the DVD as a viable Startup Disk option.

Do you have any tips?
