I have an iPhone 3GS which I use on Telecom in New Zealand. When I hit the voicemail icon it says on the screen 'Cannot Connect to Voicemail - Call your service provider for assistance'. I have seen that I should be able to set the voicemail number by dialing
5005*VMnumber#. When I do that, I hit call and the screen flashes for a split second and that is all -- I still cannot access my voicemail.
I am trying to understand the relationship of the SIM card to the voicemail number -- When you hit the voicemail icon is it pulling the number to dial off of the SIM card or is stored in the phone's memory somewhere? My guess is that the SIM cards for my carrier do not support the storing of the voicemail number on the SIM... any ideas?

Hmmm if only. Telecom NZ are not an official iPhone carrier so don't provide any assistance with queries relating to it. This issue is specific to the iPhone.
It's very likely the reason that your voicemail doesn't work is that the iPhone is not supported by your Telco. Not much you're going to be able to do.
I would agree, only we have another 'unofficial' carrier here in NZ called 2degrees whose voicemail just works on the iPhone with no modifications or programming - you just tap the voicemail button and off it goes.
It seems to me that the iPhone is pulling the number from a particular place on the SIM card where my carrier does not store it. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
