AEBS, HP OfficeJet J6480, Dell Inspiron, and 2 Macs

Hi, all:

I have cross-posted this question in the AirPort Express and printers sections... and I apologize in advance if what I'm going to write is confusing (because I'm so confused by what's going on).

Here is my present setup: NO home network, just shared broadband connection (Comcast) for one Dell (Vista) and two Macs (both Snow Leopard), via my 2006-era (domed) AirPort Extreme Base Station. And prior to last week, all three computers were printing with no difficulty to an HP OfficeJet J6480 all-in-one printer (connected wirelessly - not via USB - the the AEBS). By the way, this printer does not show up at all in AirPort Utility (I guess b/c it's not connected via USB).

First issue: Last week, the HP J6480 stopped printing altogether. I could not print to it from any of my three computers. I deleted all the printers from my two Macs, and tried to get them to recognize the J6480, but have not yet been able to do this. And I tried to delete the printer from the Windows Control Panel on my Dell Inspiron, but wasn't able to do this, either.

This has not been fun, as last week was the final week of school for my kids, and they had to print all kinds of stuff... the workaround was to put their work on a flash drive and print it at school.

Second issue: No home network (just a shared internet connection). I haven't yet figured out how to set up a home network using the AEBS, so that all my computers can share files. I would prefer not to have to set up a home network with the Dell as the "main" computer, but will do so if necessary.

Regarding networking, I used to have an IBM NetVista and a Linksys router (and an HP OfficeJet 7110 connected to the IBM NetVista - I could print to this from any computer, as long as the IBM desktop was on)...

Third issue (not as important as the first two): I also have a Canon iP90 attached to my iMac, via USB. Would it be possible for me to use my AirPort Express to pick up ("boost") the AEBS signal, and connect the Canon iP90 to the AirPort Express, so that I could print wirelessly to that printer, too?

THANKS for wading through this missive - I'll be happy to provide further info, if necessary.

It's best to avoid that when possible.

Here is my present setup: NO home network, just shared broadband connection (Comcast)

Like it or not, that does create what is normally considered a "home network".

this printer does not show up at all in AirPort Utility (I guess b/c it's not connected via USB).

Right. It's just another network client to the AirPort base station.

Last week, the HP J6480 stopped printing altogether.

In AirPort Utility, enter "manual setup" mode for the AirPort Extreme, then pull down the "Base Station" menu, select "Logs and Statistics", then select "Wireless Clients". Do you see the HP printer in that list? If not, there may be something wrong with its Wi-Fi functionality. I'd first try to reconfigure it to see if you can get it to join your network.

Does the printer have an Ethernet port? If so, you may be able to get it to work connected to the LAN port of the AirPort Extreme.

I haven't yet figured out how to set up a home network using the AEBS, so that all my computers can share files.

Your AirPort Extreme seems to be one model short (Jan. 2007) of the one that can share a disk from its USB port. Unless you replace the Extreme with a newer one or acquire a Wi-Fi or Ethernet "NAS" (network attached storage) box, your only option is to have one of your computers host the files you want to share. That functionality has nothing to do with the Extreme, so there's nothing to configure on it to do that.

I also have a Canon iP90 attached to my iMac, via USB. Would it be possible for me to use my AirPort Express to pick up ("boost") the AEBS signal, and connect the Canon iP90 to the AirPort Express, so that I could print wirelessly to that printer, too?

That should be feasible if the AirPort Express supports that printer. This Web site

may help you explore that, but it's not guaranteed to be current or completely accurate.
