I to have been in the backup stage for nearly 90 minutes since trying to upgrade to 4.0.
Maybe Apple server is just over loaded and having problems.
It is just like when ordering the new iPhone 4 where the system just crashed.
Never was able to order the iPhone 4.
Is anyone using a old style sync cable? I am at work and only have my older iPod Nano cord that I usually charge with... I am trying to do the update with the old cable... dont know if that is what is causing things to be slow... NOTE: regular syncing and backups work fine with this cable... I am reaching here... even tried putting the phone in airplane mode and turning off push to see if that helps but it didn't.
It probably is taking so long because so many people are doing this at the same time. i may wait a couple days to hear how things went before i do the upgrade and by then it will be faster too.
i can't imagine the slow backup has ANYTHING to do with Apple/AT&T/other servers being busy - it seems to be a local issue, with how it's copying data from the iPhone itself.
i'm going to remove the iToner plugin files (which solved my iPad slow-sync issues a couple months back) and see if that does anything...
Mine took 1 hr 40 minutes, so just wait. I don't get the wallpaper, don't see iBooks, but my display seems....sharper, if that's possible. Mail program updated with threading... nice! Still looking for how many of the other 100 updates we're (maybe) going to get.
I have had the same problem but agree to wait it out. I have tried what 'Chris Mercer' suggested about finding the backup folder. Mines at about 700mb out of about 4gb that is on my iphone. Will keep you posted
Same here. Download of update didn't take too long, but have been stuck in the Backing Up phase for nearly two hours now, and the progress bar only shows about a 20th done (and has done since about 5 minutes after it started).
Might have to leave it overnight (assuming it
is actually doing something).
This is how it was for me, I did a sync before I started, downloaded the update to OS4 no problem then it sat for about 55mins backing up. It sat with about 5mm of movement showing on the progress bar for all that time then flew across.
It then did the usual bit about upgrading and verifying firmware and then said 'iPhone restored to factory settings' or something similar and this was followed by 'Restoring from backup' which took about 10mins, told me it had restored from 'today's' backup and restarted, restored applications, (another 20mins, for my 87 apps), restored music and videos (another 10mins).
Then a carrier update.
The whole process has taken nearly 2Hrs, to be fair it's gone very smoothly, if not left me a little panicked in places!!!
yikes, so the backup for some people is going to be their ENTIRE iPhone info?? looking in my MobileSync folder, i don't see any larger than about 400 megs, but i've got nearly 11 gigs on this 16gb iPhone full, with about a gig or so of apps. i figure it's not backing up the music and such, but still this is a remarkably slow backup process compared with the usual backups that happen every-other day when i plug in my phone.
Mine has now finished backing up and is beginning the next bit. Taken about 60mins so far. I can tell as it started about the same time as the spain/honduras match. fingers crossed!
Mine spent over an hour on about 5% install progress, shot-up to about 45% and stayed there for another 30mins and then all of a sudden went to 100% and is now completing a reboot into the OS.
For all those waiting, hang-in there, it does seem to be slow but works.
BTW: 3G 16gb about 80% full so quite a lot to backup i guess.
