iOS 4.0 update problems

So I started the process of updating my iPhone 3G from 3.1.3 to 4.0. I started by manually backing up my iPhone by right clicking on it in iTunes. After it was finished I let 4.0 download (used the download only option). I then installed it and all was well until the process went to restore my data.

Itunes said the restore was interrupted and gave me three options, I picked "Continue restore". A few moments later a messaged popped up saying error -34 occurred and went on to say my iphone could not be synced because it couldn't find a file.

I have tried restoring it three separate times now and it just won't do it, same exact messages appear. Now itunes thinks this is a different iPhone so it wants to start a new if I go to sync it. Also the phone still has all my stuff on it like contact, texts, photos, notes, etc. The only things missing are things like my music (none on there now), custom ringtones, photos I've uploaded from itunes.

I'm not sure what my next move should be, the phone is at least usable for now.

I had the same problem. Error -34 during the upgrade process. I then tried a restore. When it asked whether to set up the phone as new or restore from backup, I chose the backup I had made before trying the upgrade. Eventually I got to a place where itunes said it had been interrupted and gave three options: "Continue restore", "delete backup", and "cancel". Like you, I chose continue restore and it failed with error -34 again. So I did the restore again and it eventually came back to the same three choices. "Continue restore" didn't work the first time, so I did not choose that. "Delete backup" sounded too dangerous. So I picked "cancel". I had to do it twice, because it asked me a second time with the exact same dialog box. After choosing "cancel" my phone began to sync. iTunes reported it was syncing my email accounts and settings, then my notes, then began reinstalling applications. At this point, I am cautiously optimistic.

Update: now restoring media.

Spent past 6 hours on phone with Apple reps. I Synced, Backed up then downloaded OS4. Lost all photos, calendar data, notes and CONTACTS. ALL. They agreed that my process was correct an iTunes "glitch". Took 2 hours with them to get the apps to finally appear. The solution Apple offered was I should have had an external hard drive. If data is lost its the owners responsibility. I guess the whole syncing, and back-up concept doesn't provide any sense of security! NOT WORTH the effort, headache and extremely poor customer service from Johnathan in Austin - Customer Relations

I tried to install OS4 on my 3G phone - but it froze in the backup mode. I did update iTunes and I did update the phone before attempting to install OS4. It was stuck in backup for over two hours with the progress bar not moving at all before I finally gave up. I rebooted the computer and phone and tried again, with the same result. I then tried again, this time I put the phone in Airplane mode and turned off the wireless so it would not be 'interupted.' Same result. This update is not ready for prime-time, and I am annoyed and disappointed with Apple. They obvioiusly did not do their homework.

So i have this error come up

-402653077

And my phone wont even be plugged and its thinking its restoring. An error occurs than asks me if i want to cancel delete of continue restore. I did manual backup b4 hand and this is really ridiculous.

Please anyone have any info how to save my phone and its contents. iTunes wont even recognize my phone.

so it seems I too have joined the ranks of non-working iPhone 3G members. Im sooooo ****** because no one from Apple has responded, put an URGENT message anywhere.
-402653077 is the second error I got, the first was something like -4026530.....
Has ANYONE been able to use the DFU setting to restore. I can't even do this. The only thing that does work is turning the phone off holding the two buttons down for over 15 secs. Odd the website says do not disconnect your phone while updating but in my situation iTunes stopped syncing.
Now as i sit here and type iTunes tries to sync the update on the loading screen that only shows the apple icon and the progress bar. (Black background)

Seems this is one way to reduce the bandwith but I'm planning on going to the Apple Store and demanding a 3gs replacement due to not being able to use my phone at all anymore.
Thanks Apple
