Sorry - no good at techy lingo - I did mean - to use eMac as the monitor.

I thought you meant that. It doesn't change the answer. Only the current 27-inch iMac provides video-in capabilities out of the box; other Macs require a network for it, and setting up the network requires a standalone monitor.
