An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653172)

What is this?
I upgraded to iOS4 on my 3G, the phone rebooted a couple of times and now I get this error:
An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653172)
The phone still says "Sync in Progress", but iTunes is not displaying anything after I click Ok to dismiss the error message.

I'm having the same problems that everyone else in this thread is having. My iPhone 3G keeps disappearing and reappearing in iTunes, and have clicked that continue backup restoration button at least 15 to 20 times. After getting nowhere I decided to just restore the phone to factory default settings and it continues to disappear and reappear in iTunes. I'm still getting nowhere. I'm really starting to worry that my phone has been turned into a brick.

By the way, the message I get when trying to restore factory default settings says *"The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (0xE800006B)"*

Hi.

I also had the error but with the id (-402620391) on the end.

It appeared every time when it was trying to restore my applications.

I looked into $user/Library/iTunes/Mobile Backups/$unique no/Manifest.plist

Here i found some <dict> entries for the apps. I deleted apps that i didn't need / would be able to download again with no loss, and then i tried to "continue restore" again. This time the bar had gotten further when it continued, and the restore finished with no errors.

I hope this helps anyone outthere with the same problem.

Beej, if that were true, what is the point of a backup prior to an upgrade? I think it's bullsh*t.

And also - when you connect the phone after the DFU, your only choices are to restore from backup or setup as a new phone. If you setup as a new phone you DON'T have the choice to restore your contacts, so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

well, I went to the Apple store and got some answers:

But first- here is my story:
My phone has experienced lots of problems with the OS4 update, I am on a 3G.
The update took me about 12 hours with many attempts and I finally got to the point where the phone works by not restoring, just creating a new phone, losing all my text messages and assorted preferences (I have my picts and contacts backed up in mobile me and I have my music backed with iTunes).
The phone seemed to work and from first glance OS4 was very pretty, I was even able to put my applications in folders and re-sync most of my info.
The problems I experienced once up and running were random.
Sometimes my contacts were there, sometimes they were not.
Every 10-15 minutes the phone would freeze and reboot on it's own.
Launching applications was risky, as it would trigger a random reboot.
Phone calls dropped all the time after 10 seconds then the phone would reboot on its own.
Picture text options would sometimes exist and sometimes not.

I finally got to the Apple store when they opened at 10am and after the long stand by wait for the genius bar - I was in!

Verdict:
OS4 was built for the new iPhone being released on Thursday.
Apple knew there was going to be some quirks with 3G and 3GS.
I was reminded that OS4 software is released as "freeware" and comes with a disclaimer to "use at your own risk"... Can you believe that?
Once your phone's firmware is updated to OS4 you CANNOT go back. The phone MUST be exchanged for a phone with OS3 software.
Apple will only do this for you if you are under warranty!!!!
I was under warranty and I left with a new 3G with software version OS3...
But here's the catch, if I go home to sync my music my back up is all OS4 from my dozens of install attempts last night.
So I went into time machine and restored my iTunes applications, MobileSync back up folder, and iTunes plist from the last back up prior to install of OS4.
I now have a perfectly working brand new 3G with my original OS3 software... I am exactly where i was at prior to my OS4 install, but at least I have a new 3G.

I reserved my iPhone 4 for pick up on Thursday and I plan on using my new/old phone as an iPod touch- LOL

AGAIN,
APPLE KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM, they want you to buy the new iPhone4 coming out on Thursday...
3G and 3GS users that update there software to OS4 will be in a hit/miss situation.
Best of luck to all of you.
Good job on this one Apple, way to throw some shotty freeware on your website and in iTunes.

I complained to AT&T, and after an hour of killing the operator with extreme honest and kindness and bringing her to the apple discussion pages, I got a month of free credit.
be sure to complain to AT&T, they have apple locked in and they back the product. I lost cellular service for about 16 hours during my installs, they were very understanding - just kill them with kindness..

Again, good luck....

I had the same problem saying itunes could not connect to this iphone because of error 0xe800006b. I tried restarting everything and then disconnected bluetooth and airport. Plugged iphone back in and got a white screen with iphone written in the middle of it and nothing happened. I ejected the iphone and restarted airport which gave me access to the internet again. Plugged the phone back in and hooray! It's restoring from backup as I'm writing. Phew!

Jason: After I told it to set up as a new phone, it gave me the option to restore my contacts and apps. tragicallydave said the same thing on another thread.

Maybe you don't have the latest iTunes installed?

Re backups, obviously my upgrade path was too abnormal for them to be of use. In normal cases, they are of use.

Beej, I have iTunes 9.2, so I'm on the latest version. I was synching previously with Outlook prior to OS4, but the syncing was screwed after the 9.2 upgrade. I could sync with Outlook, but the changes made on my phone weren't going to Outlook. My only recourse after I setup the iPhone as new device was to sync with Outlook again, but I gold old data because the sync wasn't working right prior to the upgrade. Now I have to go and make all the tedious edits, and I'm not even sure I'll remember them all.
