An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653172)

What is this?
I upgraded to iOS4 on my 3G, the phone rebooted a couple of times and now I get this error:
An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-402653172)
The phone still says "Sync in Progress", but iTunes is not displaying anything after I click Ok to dismiss the error message.

Apparently this is just a time-out issue. After dismissing the error, I undocked, then re-docked and iTunes displayed a dialog saying the restore was incomplete, do I want to finish? I clicked resume restore and it continued on. I did this a couple more times and finally it finished synchronizing.
Keep at it; it should make it through.

I'm having the same issue, only when I tell iTunes to continue restoring from backup, it says "An error occurred while restoring (-54)". Been at it for an hour or so now, and no combination of restarting phone or laptop or iTunes has fixed it. I found a link that lead me to 'unlocking' my itunes folder using Applescript editor, but that only got my apps reinstalled and working, still no music syncing.

Hi everyone.

I was having the same trouble as well. But, after about two hours of no luck and trying different USB ports, etc, the last things I did:

- Airplane mode on phone
- bluetooth off on computer
- Wireless off on computer
- used authentic Apple cable instead of generic Chinese replacement.

It continued everything just as it should have, first try.

Good luck everyone, and enjoy!

well, i am having the same issues. But I am stuck in a loop and my phone won't restore at all.... it gets stuck on the same application BIA (Brothers In Arms). But since the iphone won't mount, I can't tell it not to install BIA. I even removed BIA from the app folder to see if that would help, but no luck. So I put it back in the folder and now I am trying to restore it again. when it gets to installing the app BIA it gets stuck, reboots, and appears to get stuck on BIA again (scratching head)......
any thoughts?

I just got my phone back after about 3.5 hours of trying. I downloaded the new OS and as it was backing up, it hung and hung and hung until it finally said it could not complete the backup. At that point, I was sunk. The phone was in a bad place and each time I tried to restore, I was hit with an error. I disconnected, re-connected, and on and on with Itunes sometimes recognizing the phone and sometimes not. As I was trying to link to apple help (ironic-they want to call me and I have no phone to answer because their update crashed my phone...) I tried to restore a final time and it finally worked. Like trying to win a radio contest by being the 18th caller, I finally had success. It restored the phone OS and then restored all my info from my backup last night. The only advice I can give is to keep trying and maybe it will work.... It did for me but not without a lot of swearing and cold beer to pass the time.

okay, so it seems that it installs the iphone software just fine, then it reboots and starts to install applications, then it just gets hung up about 1/16 thru the progress bar and just keeps rebooting and maintaining that 1/16 bar........ I will have alcohol poisoning by the time it finishes....
You rushed it Apple! I would have had patience and waited until you had it debugged.....
I will see to it that AT&T puts some compensation credit on my plan, let them take it up with Apple!

iPhone 3G, 8GB. Never jailbroken, etc. Upgraded to OS 4 fine. Restore failed the error "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone" -- Phone was hung in the sync. Disconnected and reconnected, which prompted a dialog that the restore had been interrupted, and should it continue. I pressed Continue. Then error dialog box "An error occurred while restoring." Quit iTunes and restarted iTunes. Tried restoring, which was apparently a backup from when the phone had been wiped.

So I decided to just sync my media. iTunes has problems with my media files: 'Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied to the iPhone "Dana's iPhone" because one or more errors occurred. For a list of items that could not be copied, click the triangle below.'

When clicking the triangle, a list of my media files, with each one: 'iTunes could not copy [filename] to the iPhone "Dana's iPhone" because the file could not be found." Weird thing is, I can play the media in iTunes, but the phone sync cannot find them...

Apps seem to be fine, phone works, but no media. Turns out that my media file locations were split between the iTunes Music library and a "Previous iTunes Libraries" folders. I had to get them all reconsolidated into the iTunes Music folder and it seems much better now. This "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder was what my main iTunes window was called before the update, so this problem was not caused by the update -- but after the update, it broke the link between my media locations. Ugh.
