There are purchased items on the iPod that have not been transferred?

I am really sorry for duplicating this thread, but I don't think it will get much attention in the other forum.

I am trying to restore my iPod Touch 3G (iOS 4, iTunes 9.2) so that I can install the official iOS 4 that was released today. My iOS is a GM seed. I know that since I am not a developer I shouldn't have the GM seed, but I thought that it was the final release.

Anyway, when I try to restore it, I get an error telling me that:

"There are purchased items on the iPod "John's iPod" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. If you restore this iPod, these items will be erased and you will have to purchase them again..."

As you can understand, I don't want to lose any purchases. I don't actually know what purchases it is referring to, because I have quite a few purchases.

Here are the things I have tried:

Syncing multiple times
Doing a "Transfer purchases" (by right clicking the iPod in the sidebar) multiple times.
Restart iTunes
Restart the iPod
Check Google for any solutions, and the few that were there I had already tried.

How do I solve this, or be assured that there aren't actually any un-transferred purchases?

Also, if you know the answer, how do I 'replace' my GM seed with the 'real' iOS 4?

Good news for those of you having this problem when trying to move your Apps from your old iPhone to your new iPhone. I went to the Apple Genius Bar and, whilst they could not identify the problem, they did have a way of getting around it.

1. Sync & Back-up your old iPhone.
2. It will still not show the missing Apps in iTunes on your computer.
3. However, the data from these Apps has been stored in your computer.
4. Connect your new iPhone and Sync with your iTunes.
5. This will add the Apps that do show in your iTunes, but not those that won't transfer.
6. But, make a list of the missing Apps and redownload them onto your new iPhone.
7. It will ask if you wan't to "buy" the App, click OK, and then another message will pop up pointing out that the App will be free because you have downloaded it before.
8. When it installs itself on your iPhone it will link in to all the data relating to that App that has been stored somewhere in the background.

Voila! It even reinstalled all the scores, etc on my games that I had to redownload.

Hope this helps.

There was one more step for me that nobody has mentioned yet. I too was getting this same error, recommending that I should not update since I had items on my phone that have not transferred yet. I tried authorizing my computer, but that didn't seem to work either. Then, when I clicked 'Store/Sign In', it took me to my account information and showed me that I needed to update my information. I forgot that I had recently gotten a new credit card, so the information they had for my itunes store account was old. After I updated to my new card, then I was able to authorize my computer again and then rightclick/transfer and once that was done, I clicked 'update' and it successfully updated my software to 4.0.1.

Okay so i had the same issue, Transfer Purchases would not help, but here's how i got it to work.
First of all, I was given an album through iTunes, copied the files elsewhere just in case.

I was not Synching Apps and concerned about turning it on, but i clicked Sync Apps.

I made sure every single App in the left column was checked, and also "Automatically sync new apps"

I had to move all of my icons around through my four pages on the iPhone since they were scrambled, move them back into the new subfolders, etc. Finally i had matched my iPhone's screen's with iTunes screen.

I then clicked Apply, finally accepted the risk of the update to all of my purchased apps & music, and the backup and sync went perfectly.

Now my iPhone is version 4.0.1 and I don't get the warning anymore.

Best of luck!

Same thing with my iPhone 4, trying to update to 4.0.1.

After trying most (not all of the suggestions) the one about iBook books struck me. After numerous attempts to sync, transfer purchases, authorize computer... I noticed I had two copies of the King James Bible (free) that I had "purchased" showing up on the itunes side. Only one in the iPhone.

Deleting this single book in iBooks on the iPhone solved the problem.

Afterwards, I reloaded it in iBooks, which took a few tries. I eventually had to "repurchase" it. Not sure if the reloading issue had anything to do with the orginal problem or there were problems at the apple book store.

Anyway, everything is now good. More convinced than ever Eli (DW) was right about his book. 😉

I have this same problem with my iPod touch. I really don't feel like futzing with this one to figure out how it works and protect myself when it doesn't. I would be satisfied if I had some folders and their contents that I could drag and drop from one place to another. Alternatively, if the warning message had a button labeled "Transfer Now", which would just solve the problem without me having to think about it, then that would be ok.

I ran into this same issue earlier today with my wife's phone, after I'd just finished syncing & updating my own phone without any errors. I tried most of the suggestions in this thread on my wife's phone, without success. Then I tried updating all her apps from the App Store on her phone... after that, the OS update from iTunes worked fine.

My complete guess as to why I was getting the error is because we both have some of the same apps, and our apps weren't at the same versions, and we have "Automatically sync new apps" turned off in iTunes. I update my apps regularly, but she doesn't update very often, so maybe iTunes saw the down-rev apps on her phone as being un-transferred purchases. YMMV, but hopefully this helps some of you out there.

There are purchased items on the iPod that have not been transferred?
