How to burn with LaCie external DVD burner

I just recently got a LaCie external DVD burner for my Imac and have been trying to make copies of some of my dvd's but i haven't been able to. DVD-R's are only 4.7 gigs big and most dvd's are bigger than that. Does anyone know how to solve that problem???

I assume your iMac has not internal SuperDrive?

Also, when you say "DVD", I presume they are commercial movie DVDs?? These DVDs (I think) uses the Dual-layer format which is more than the single layer 4.7Gb size, which is 9.4Gb.

Even so, with app like Toast, you may not be able to "clone" or duplicate a DVD because of its protection/anti-piracy copy code written into the DVDs.

Commercial DVDs cannot be duplicated because of copyright protection. Not legally.

If you have DVDs which have been used to store data, such as files like your word processing documents, digital camera images, or your iTunes collection, then you shoud be able to copy them no problem with your LaCie drive.

My LaCie external drive reads and writes dual layer DVDs, and I presume yours does too. It's nothing to do with the storage capacity of the disk. It won't work because of the copyright protection.
