Multitasking question

How do I close an app without having to go into the multitasking tray and closing it there?

Maybe I don't want the app to stay running in the background. Is there a shorter way to close it?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

I asked the same question, but the replies so far indicate there is no way to keep an app out of the Multitasking Dock. I have an appointment at the Apple Genius Bar tomorrow, so I'll ask. Otherwise, we will find dozens of apps nested in the Multitaking Dock.

The apps don't "stay running" in the background. They remain frozen and resume once you reopen them.

I've found out that you don't have to close them, they are there for quick changes to apps...now I love it!!! Thanks for the help!!
