Audiobooks not recognized after iOS4 upgrade

My audiobooks are not recognized by my iPhone after upgrading to iOS4. They worked fine prior to upgrade. They sync, but are not seen by the ipod app. When I select audiobooks it displays a white image with "No Audiobooks" on it. I know they are transferred to my iPhone because they show up in iTunes-Devices-iPhone-Books, and eat up a lot of memory. The only way I can get them to play is if I create a playlist and sync it, and select playlists. Anyone else have this problem?

I tried changing restrictions/parental controls and it did nothing for me. I tried restore factory settings (but did not setup as a new phone because I don't want to spend a week getting apps back and setup). That didn't work either. The only way I could get all of my audible.com books to sync was to change the media type to music. Hopefully there will be a bug fix for this soon.

I finally figured out how to get my audio books synced. Here are some tips:

1. If you're using Audible and your audiobooks are missing: de-authorize your iTunes then use Audible Download Manager to re-add them to iTunes.

2. The "Audiobooks" Library category has been replaced with "Books" in iTunes 9.2. Properly imported + typed audiobooks will now show up there.

3. Download the iBooks App for your iPhone/iPod Touch

4. Sync your device and select the new "Books" tab. This is actually a very tall page, so it's easy to miss that it has an area for Audio Books at the bottom. Just scroll down and it will come into view. You can then check the "Sync Audiobooks" checkbox and a whole new section of the page will appear.

Same here. Under Audiobooks it shows Audible (23 books), but when you follow that entry none of the books are listed. I can find them by doing a search within Audiobooks, although this does not always work right away after I complete a sync, in which case I can find it by doing a search on the home page. All these things have been suggested above.

Using your suggestions I tried to take a shortcut as iTunes did not show a changed status after I deauthorized iTunes for my audible account in Advanced on iTunes menu - it did not change from Deauthorize to Authorize. In any case, my shortcut was to download the iBook app and checking Sync Books on my iphone, although I don't have any iBooks. This did not result in showing my Audiobook titles, although I can find them by searching as was suggested in earlier posts. Then I tried removing all Audiobooks from iTunes, sync the iphone (to remove the Audiobooks there as well), reconnect iTunes with the Audiobook folder on my hard drive and sync with iphone. Unfortunately, all to no avail.

Another titbit: I downloaded an Audible file from the iTunes Store in the hope that Apple was as malicious as I think it is by requiring you to purchase at least one Audiobook from Apple as a toll to get the Audiobooks to properly list, but I was disappointed to find out that this Audiobook also did not show up under Audiobooks. OK, Apple may not be as evil as I thought, but this is not the time to give these guys a break. I wasted too much time on getting iOS4 ready for the road.

As with my other no-show Audiobooks, I was able to find (and play) the downloaded file using the iPhone search function that is accessed from the home screen.

After having the same problem, I finally got audiobooks onto my iTouch using "Books," scrolling down and checking "Synch Audiobooks."

However, I found two new problems:

1. Some of my audiobooks show the correct author and cover art, but have a title of "Untitled."
2. The list of audiobooks in the "Include Audiobooks from Playlist" doesn't scroll.

Altogether sloppy system update by Apple.

I suggest that any of you who. like me, have Audible.com subscriptions contact them as well as Apple. Maybve they can help call these problems to Apple;s attention.

Actually, after closing iTunes and re-opening:

1. The "Include Audiobooks from Playlist" (in the Books submenu) is now scrolling, albeit very slowly at first ... as if it's taking a long time to populate the list.
2. In the "Audiobooks" (again, in the Books submenu) scrolling list, I can correct the "Unknown Album" entries only by going into the "Info" for the actual file in "Books" (this time in the main iTunes left hand menu) and manually entering the title of the book in "Album." Evidently some Audible book downloads include an info entry in "Album," and other don't.

Good recommendation! I added a Smart playlist to organize all my Audiobooks. I also made sure that all book 'chapters' were compiled as Compilations. Although (after synching my iPhone) they still did not show up under the Audiobooks header (where they were before the upgrade), I can now see them under Playlists/Compilations, most of them, not all of them.

Although I can live with the workaround, I am still rather amazed that this was not tested before the release of iOS 4.

I am not sure about your recommendation to contact Audible, as Audiobooks worked fine in iOS 3, which means that this is not an Audible issue. You are right though that Audible may be able to talk some sense into Apple.
