I downloaded and installed iOS4 and got as far as restoring the apps. The process crashed at that point with the following error number: -402653173. The iphone then went into recovery mode and when I tried restoring I get "The phone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9)." I have tried numerous times including restarting Itunes, rebooting, changing USB ports all to no luck.

I am now without a iphone! Help APPLE!

Well, I got the same bad news. I called Apple and was the phone for over an hour. They had me try everything that I had already found on the discussion boards. I even got to a senior person and she explained that error 9 is only related to USB problems (which I already knew from the posts I read). The final verdict was that something caused a problem in the iPhone and it needs to be replaced. I'm not sure if I got lucky and got the right person, but she told me that I can go to my local Apple store and they will replace it right there. She even setup the appointment for me. I am going in later today to get it replaced (I forgot to ask about cost, but I guess since she didn't mention it that it should be free?). I will post the outcome later today.

I also had the same thing happen to me. Now I can't do anything with it. How can this be happening to so many and not be an answer to anyone. Feeling very frustrated.

Ok, so I went to the Apple store to get my phone replaced. The first thing they tried was to recover the phone and they got the same error I got. They then asked me if I was still under warranty and I said no. They said it would be $199 to replace phone. I was shocked. All I did was plug in a working phone and it bricked it! I asked to speak to manager. I pleaded my case to him and after a while of back and forth, me being very nice and non argumentative, he agreed to replace it for free. Before he did agree, he tried one more thing. He talked to one of his genius’’ and they said it looked like some of the USB contacts had corrosion on them. He was going to have them try to clean them and see if that worked. Once the genius got into it, he realized it wasn’t corrosion. It was at that point that the manager agreed to replace it.

They said the that error 9 is a communication error, usually USB related. I told the manager that the person on the Apple support line said that maybe the iOS4 update did something that caused the USB to not work correctly. The manger at the store said there is no way that a software update could make the USB stop working and I agreed, but I said it was working perfectly before this all happened (on the way home, I really thought about it and a firmware update could mess up hardware). One of the reasons he agreed to replace it was the curious timing of when it happened. I’m just glad he did. They gave me a new (or refurbished, they didn’t know) 3G and installed IOS4 on it for me. I got home, plugged it in and recover everything. The only thing that I had to re-enter was some passwords. Whew…

So if you have this problem, I guess you will have to plead your case and get lucky. Unless, I guess, if apple finds the problem and fixes it. From everybody I talked with, they all feel it is some kind of hardware issue on the phone. Somehow, I guess the iOS4 update made it come to life.

Oh, and by the way, I was able to go into the Apple website tonight and order an iPhone 4 with a ship date of July 15.

No warning from apple that upgrading might damage your iphone...

Hello everybody... I had the same problem with my iphone 3G. I just downloaded itunes 9.2, I conected my iphone and I sincronized it and this unknown error 9 came to me, I tried to restore it with 3 diferent computers and nothing changed. I took the iphone to an Apple Store here in Venezuela and they didn`t know how to solve this issue. The expert tried some ways to solve the problem but he can`t. I had a question for apple... WHAT CAN I DO? my iphone was working perfectly before update to iOS4, and now I just have a piece of hardware... it doesn`t leave the recovery mode. WHO TAKE THE RESPONSABILITY FOR THIS? I am a Apple fan but I am really dissapointed for this problem with my iphone. Hoping that some one in Cupertino read this and give me a solution... Thanks...

I had the same problem: the installation would proceed until it came to restoring the firmware when the installation would freeze. The solution that worked for me is posted here:

On a Mac, go to /Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ and remove the folders. Then restore your iPhone.

Here's the method:

Download RecBoot 1.0.2
I found it here: http://www.sebby.net/659-released-recboot-1-0-2/
Plug in your iPhone.
Close iTunes.
Run "RecBoot Exit Only"
Click the "Exit Recovery Mode" button.
The screen on the iPhone will go black. At this point, UNPLUG the iPhone (before it starts back up)
It will boot up correctly after finishing the firmware install.
Now plug your iPhone back in and complete a normal restore.

i've got a brand new iphone 4 in front of me that everyone is telling me is screwed. i only took it out of the box 2 hours ago, and i've spent 90 minutes trying to find a way out of the restore loop...
and most of the advice i've got has been "its a brick. take it back to the shop".
which is not what you want to hear when you know that the shops dont have any more iphones...
