iPad randomly turns off in the middle of operation

My 32GB+3G has this quirky habit of turning off completely at random moments. I'll click a button--and it doesn't matter which one, or be writing an email and it goes black. I press the power button and it opens back up to the startup screen, and I enter my password. At this point it returns to the last task/screen. It happens 2 or 3 times per hour of use but I cannot replicate it on cue. Any idea what is happening? I'm not bumping the power button accidentally either. I'm mystified.

What if you have an iPad 2 and its doing the same thing? I cannot use Safari, it freezes, then closes the app or turns off completely before the first page is loaded. I cannot read my books in kindle, kobo, or nook because after a couple of pages, it does the same thing, freezes, then closes the app or turns off. It won't even let me set a bookmark. The same with music and email, etc. Sometimes, it will close the app three times in succession then it will finally turn itself off. I have plenty of memory, storage, etc. I used to live on my iPad, now I despise the thing.

Also, when I press the Home button twice, all I see are the apps that are open, without any task bar. I habitually check this screen and push up on the app to close any I am not actively using and it still occurs. Today, I have been trying to read a book in Kindle, and I have to press the home button, move the cursor to the last page I read, plus one, read that and when I try to go to the next page it freezes and closes. Then I have to repeat these actions, but to the next page, read that...and it freezes and closes or turns off. I try to set a bookmark as soon as I get to the page I am going to read but it either ignores it or it sets it, but it has disappeared and doesn't show when I reopen the app. I am so frustrated and disappointed with Apple that I could scream. At this point my iPad is a very expensive paperweight.

Is there a case or cover that is near the sleep button? Maybe it's slightly touching the button.

If that's not it, you can try a reset or restore.
To reset, go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset. No data will be lost, but your icons may be rearranged. Also, some settings will need recreated.

To restore, do this in itunes on your computer with the ipad connected. It will totally replace the OS with a new copy.

My iPad turns itself off when I go into photos, I open photos go into the saved photos album and start flicking through the thumbnails of my photos then the screen goes black for about 10 seconds the apple logo comes up and it reboots. It's has done it 3 or 4 times in the last 2 days getting very annoying. It has done it occasionally ever since the day I got my iPad which was the day they where released in Australia. Anyone else have this problem? And is there a solution?

Yes the exact same thing is happening to me laynekulwin. I have about 3500 photos and when I scroll through them the Ipad will just reboot by itself completely and consequently also takes a very long time to reboot. I believe I have narrowed it down to very specific pictures that cause this problem, however I cant delete them because whenever the ipad tries to render them it reboots!

Same thing is happening to me but I have zero photos loaded on my iPad. I use it for email/surfing/reading exclusively. The problem never happened until I upgraded the OS & now it shuts down more & more frequently & I've noticed that the pages no longer turn easily on my iBooks which is more annoying that the random shut-downs. I've noticed myself no longer screaming from my rooftop how AWESOME my iPad is...guess a trip to the genius bar is in my future.
